Aug 22, 2010 - Recently the transmission won't go into overdrive. Stays in 3rd gear like when you press the o/d button to do so. When car is cold (live in ...
1 answer · Top answer: Hello and thank you for using just answer! The check engine light is on correct?
Usually when the check engine light is on the car will not go into overdrive Use a scan tool to retrive the codes first and repair problems related to the codes Clear the codes then see if you still have trouble with overdrive
No, the 2 problems are not related, the SAI pump has no function while driving. Do not "flush" your transmission unless you want problems. Just change the filter and replace fluid with Dexron 6. Many people have had tranny problems with our platform after a full "flush". Your throttle position sensor may have problems, have it checked out for the shifting issues. Remember, the TPS is attached to the throttle body, not removable. Must replace whole throttle body, IF that's your issue.
This is the "overdrive" on or off indicator light. When it says "OD off", means that overdrive is off and transmission is in 3rd gear. When it's "on" then transmission will shift into 4th gear or "Overdrive". The engine will turn slower using less fuel for better economy.
Does the cruise work? is the check engine light off when driving? Does the overdrive off light come on and go out as you push the button on the gearshift? Does the speedometer work normally? Any of these things can make it not go into high gear. Does the gearshft work smoothly and seem to be in the correct gear? Are the motormounts good enought that the engine doesn't rock around too much and pull on the cable? Their's a few electrical connectors connected to the transmission, are they connected and not leaking oil and worn or damaged. Most of the time this problem can be solved by carefully looking over these things and you'll find some asquew. If not and the check engine light or overdrive off light is'nt on the there's transmission troble and you need to show up for your free roadtest at a transmission shop and listen to what they have to say. If it sounds reasonable and straight forward do it it it sounds like thier guessing take it somewhere else. Your Cadillac dealer will be right but they may build up a strong bill before they fix the car. and want still more to do the repairs.
Have the vehicle scanned. The overdrive light is like the check engine light for the transmission. There are transmission codes in the ecm if the overdrive light is blinking.
There is another recall on the cruise control. The first added a fuse. This new recall is about wiring and lighting problems caused by the cruise. Everything from not shifting out of Park to no brake lights to false dash indicators. Best to contact the dealer, if it is a recall its free.
Your transmission problem could be related to the TPS sensor. The TPS sensor indicated to the PCM when and what gear the transmission should be in. As for the Lucas and other additives to the transmission may be doing it more harm then good, As the transmission oil is thicker, the transmission line pressure increases. The PCM try's to compensate for that by letting the converter lock up clutch to slip and the fluid retention in the solenoid to change gears stick causing it to shudder between gear shifts.
Recap, Check the TPS sensor readings and the Wire Harness. Look for loose connections and corrosion that may not be giving the proper readings to the ECM. Rescan the car for any DTC codes and most transmission chop can do that for you if your going to get it serviced there anyways. Have the transmission fluid flushed and filter changed, and have them do a transmission line pressure checked, there are additives out there to keep the fluid from foaming which is ok, but changing the fluid's weigh can cause transmission failure. Good luck and hope this helps and keep me posted, be glad to help.
check the transmission fluid first . ============
overdrive allows the engine to run at lower RPM's , which increases the fuel
economy and also the transmission runs cooler
