I did replace the air filter and sprayed carb cleaner on the throttle plates. My wife thinks the plug wires will fix it. I am gonna take the hose off the brake booster and shoot some injecter cleaner in there. Where is the egr low idle thingy?

Nope I do not even know where it is. can you give me the location of it? I did change the air filter and sprayed some carb cleaner on the plates. that helped some but the car has got like a skip . It idles steady but runs like 3 plug wires are off. The wores aint never been changed and that puppy has ove 100k miles on it. Will that make a diff changing them plug wires on that high powered thingamajig ignition? It aint a distributer cap its 6 coils made into one.

Where is the fuel filter? will the system loose pressure when I change it? Do I put gas in the fuel filter before I replace it? Does it look like a oil filter or is it inline type? Thanks so much everyone.

Another debate here in the real world is do I change the power pack(that the thang the plug wires connect to) or just the wires and how would yall feel about getting the wires and power pack off of a wreck at the junkyard?

Outdoorsman I do not even know where to find the fuel filter. Is it on the motor or under the car? If it is under the car I am in deep doo doo.

I have changed the fuel filter. I still have the problem. Hard like hell to crank in the morning. Does the MAF have a flap in it that closes on cold start for fuel mixture? If I look in it with the engine cold and the ignition on should that flap be closed? If their is one? What should the eng temp sensor ohm out to with engine cold?

  • Jonah Oneal Dec 17, 2010

CHANGE PLUGS AND WIRES.CHECK YOUR COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE WITH COLD ENGINE SHOULD BE HIGH WHEN ENGINE TEMPERATURE RISES COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE SHOULD DECREASE. TO SAVE TIME AND MONEY HAVE VECHICLE SCANNED CHECK FOR ANY TROUBLE CODES WHICH CAUSE ENGINE RUN ROUGH LIKE FAULTY IDLE SPEED CONTROL OR EGR VALVE LEAKING.

I got a skip in mine as well. As far as the coil pack and omh test can be done. the coild should read 13000 omhs between the coil so the bottom two should read 13k the middle two and top two. on coil. now t he secondary should read .5 ohms. Autozone will do this test for free. Does it just miss at idle or under strain or load. Under load will make me think coil and wires. Inline spark tester is a good test to.

Change the plug wires. Should be just fine. check any vacuum hoses as well.

The fuel filter is inline.. You just need to remove gas cap to relieve fuel pressure. You can release fuel pressure from the fuel line but is not necessary.
You only need to disconnect it, and replace with new one. You can find further instructions if you go to autozone.com and register for free. Then you will have a full free online repair manual!!!!!!

Before replacing coil packs, remove each plug on at a time, put wire back on plug and lay on top of motor or metal surface. Then have some turn the car over and see if you have spark to every spark plug. If you have spark to every plug, then the coil packs and module are fine. and just the wires may need to be replaced. If you do not have spark in one or two wires, then you can get coil packs and module at junk yard for about $40

I changed the fuel filter. It is still hard to start. Their are 2 things that I would like to pick your brain.
The engine temp sensor and the MAF. Does that maf have a flap inside it that closes when the engine is cold? Does the brain take a reading from the engine temp sensor and close that flap so that the engine can have a fuel air mixture similar to that of older cars with a choke? I was thinking of tinkering with the maf. the engine has not been tun in 3 weeks. That was after I had the fuel filter replaced. When I take the hose loose and unsnap the filter cover should I be able to see daylight or should that puppy be open OR should I turn the ignition on first (without cranking the car) then should that flap be closed for cold starts when I look in there?

The fuel filter is under the drivers side of the vehicle or should be i believe on this model of car along the inner-side of the frame. I believe it takes two wrenches to get it off. 11/16 and a 5/8. You don't have to prime the filter because when you stick a new one on the electric fuel pump will fill it up. Also make sure you break open you gas cap first to relieve pressure before removing the fuel filter.

I read further down and seen you were older and would have a hard time changing the fuel filter. And the other thing is that you have to jack the car up to get to it or have it on a hoist. I am sorry I am not there to help you out. It is almost manditory anymore to change your fuel filter at least once a year and even more in dirtier conditions. A lot of times during the winter we have found that vehicles will be stranded because of frozen up fuel filters or so dirty it cant push fuel through the filter. I believe it is around $20.00 to $30.00 to change your fuel filter. Walmart and some of the fast lube places might be cheaper. Sometimes the fuel filters that we have changed are at our cost $20.00 so not sure what it will cost for your filter.

I have changed the fuel filter and the car is still too fugging hard to crank in the morning. Is their a flap in the MAF that closes like a choke for cold cranking? Should that flap be closed on cold start? What is the ohms on a eng temp sensor of the engine when dead cold.

I put a new starter on the car last week.
Somehow came up the the car insuarance money this week
I also added some Prestone fuel injector cleaner to the tank.
Today it only took 3 trys to get it cranked while pumping the gas.
Not bad. The fuel injector cleaner seems to be doing the trick.
The battery is staying hot so the drain musta been in the starter.
The new starter came with a butte connector for the ignition wire instead of a
flag terminal like the original. Directions said something about corrosion problems.
I would like to take the time express my thanks to all who gave me advice. I have upgraded the status from sh!tty to so-so. I am hoping the more she drives it the better it will get.
I cannot get a new car. This one was handed down to me from my Dad. I couldn't make payments anyway on disability. Thanks again.
I get up every morning and crank the car for the wife. Maybe one day she will be able to. LOL !

Engine running rough why?

did you replace the plugs leads one at a time
and not mix up the firing order

is this plug lead layout the same as your engine ?

if the car was running rough before

could be fuel related
or a burnt valve = uneven cylinder compression

I have a code P0355 Coil E I believe it is #5 But not sure which is #5

Mate your car runs rough ok, To find the faulty coil just pull a spark plug lead off and start your car, If it runs (ROUGHER) than before then that coil is ok. Turn the car off and replace that spark plug lead on the spark plug. Repeat with the next spark plug lead and so on until you start your car and it runs the same as if THAT spark plug lead is on or off, THAT'S THE FAULTY COIL.... I hope I haven't wasted your time.....

2007 chrysler town & country has a rough idle but drives smooth what could it be

If it idles rough it runs rough, you just don't
notice it

You can start anywhere you want

If you haven't changed spark plugs in 3 years do that

Replace any front or upstream O2 Sensors over 100,000 miles

Check fuel pressure, tps sensor voltages, check for loose air
filter cover,vacuum leaks,loose O2 sensor,just go thru the
entire engine,it obviously needs work & I will bet it hasn't seen
much & you don't know what is done when you ask & pay
for work.
May sound harsh but many shops aren't there to resolve problems,
they throw on as many parts as the people on this site do at home,
from the questions is see here, dealers guess as well and don't road
test,kind of sad really

You will need to figure out if you have spark to the plugs, and if not- if you have voltage to the coil to proceed.

Tuned up car changed 02 sensor full tank of fuel still running rough

Oxygen sensor only report the condition of the engine the rough running condition can range from a worn sparkplug wires to worn sparkplugs to valve problems to injector problems. with the cadillac deville a tune up should be the first attempt to smooth the rough idle with the inspection of the cap and rotor cap and rotor do have a tendancy to arc internally and create misfire so does sparkplug wire that can leak spark voltage to ground and create misfire. the spark plug wire especially if they are brittle and hard can create issues

plugs and or wires.
for some reason the spark is jumping out of the wire or plug.
the plug insulater may have a crack in it.
also use a carb spray to clean out the throttle body at the throttle plate.
all the black carbon will build up around the throttle plate and restrick airflow at an idle position.

hope this helps
thank you

Rough start and slow pickup/speed. Uses alot of fuel.

That's probably because you've got a lot of carbon build up in your engine's combustion chamber.

The best way would be to restore the power and speed would be to have a carbon ridding solution injected into the engine. The solution will liquify the carbon and other build-ups, which would then restore the "power" of your car. You'll get better acceleration, higher rpm and top speed, etc. have a mechanic do it for you. It's alot cheaper and faster than having the engined overhauled.
