1992 Dodge Spirit ignition cylinder problem

The ignition on my 1992 Dodge Spirit does not spring-back to the run position. All the accessories come on but the car does not start. Key stays in the farthest position.

I have a 93 and had the same problem. It is your 'Lock Cylinder'. To replace it, you will have to take off the steering wheel. if you have an airbag equipped spirit, remove that first after disconnecting the battery and waiting 15+ minutes. on the right side there will be a spring loaded mechanism you need to push down th a small tool. make sure your keys are ut and its in the off position. the cylinder should pop right out. get a new lock cylinder at an auto parts store. price varies, from 15 to 80 bux. beware and test the new mechnaism a lot if you can before you pop the new cylinder in. I put a new one in and it got stuck on run. it is a nightmare to take out when in run. The new one pops in with the spring loaded mechanism fitting into the hole. wiggle the steering wheel if it doesnt set all the way down at first. Replace steering wheel and airbag. test from drivers side.

How to fix 1992 Dodge Spirit Ignition problem when cylinder comes out or locks up

you can go to the junk yard and get another barrel assembly , but you run the risk that you will have top reprogram the immobilizer
It may be cheaper to get a locksmith involved to fit a new barrel keyed to your existing key and that way the expense of programming the key to the immobilizer is avoided

Blower fan in 92 dodge spirit doesn't work. no power to the fuse controlling the blower motor

Well the power comes from a 30amp fuse which is hot in the run position. So it originates at the key switch.
The key switch may be faulty or it could be in the wiring between the switch and the fuse box.

Ignition

he ignition switch generally has four positions: off, accessories, on, and start. Some cars have two off positions, off and lock; one turns off the car, and the other allows the key to be removed from the ignition. When the key is turned to the accessories position, certain accessories, such as the radio, are powered; however, accessories that use too much battery power, such as window motors, remain off in order to prevent the car's battery from being drained. The accessories position uses the least amount of battery power when the engine is not running, which is why drive-in movie theaters recommend that the car be left in theaccessories mode during the movie.

The on position turns on all of the car's systems, including systems such as the fuel pump, because this is the position the ignition switch remains in while the car's engine is running. The start position is spring loaded so that the ignition switch will not remain there when the key is released. When the key is inserted into the ignition switch lock cylinder and turned to the start position, the starter engages; when the key is released, it returns to the on position, cutting power to the starter. This is because the engine runs at speeds that the starter cannot match, meaning that the starter gear must be retracted once the engine is running on its own.

Either the ignition switch or the lock cylinder may fail in a car, but both circumstances have very different symptoms. When the ignition switch fails, generally the electrical wiring or the plastic housing develops problems. The car may not turn on and/or start when this happens. Also, the spring-loaded start position could malfunction, in which case the starter will not engage unless the key is manually turned back to the on position.

When the lock cylinder malfunctions, however, the operation of the key itself will become problematic. If the tumblers become stripped, the lock cylinder may be able to turn with any key, or you may be able to remove the key when the car is on. If the tumblers begin to shift, the lock cylinder may not turn. Sometimes the key can be wiggled until the lock cylinder turns, but it is important to remember that this is only a temporary fix.

Replacing an ignition switch can be tricky business, particularly in newer cars, because of the anti-theft devices used in cars. Once the ignition switch is separated from the back of the lock cylinder, the car can be started with a screwdriver, making it vital that this switch be difficult to get to. It is important to consult a shop manual before attempting this kind of repair, as the anti-theft devices may require special tools; attempting to remove an ignition switch without the proper tools can render the car inoperable.

I have a 1992 dodge spirit that the wipers quit working. The fuse was blown and every time I change fuse it blows when I turn on the ignition.

Try unplugging the wiper motor and see if it blows the fuse. If it doesn't, then your motor has an internal short and needs to be replaced.

How to replace ignition

There are a couple of different scenarios if I remember correctly. If you have a key that will turn the ignition cylinder then it will be easy. Follow these steps.
1. Disconnect Battery
2. Remove the plastic shroud around the steering column
3. Insert key and turn to the accessory position
4. Insert a small ice pick into the retainer hole( it is usually on either the top or bottom of cylinder ) and then pull on ignition at same time

If you do not have an existing key then you will need to drill the wafers out of the ignition in order to get it to turn to the accessory position. Just be careful not to drill too deep so as not to damage the ignition housing. Is there an easy online guide to changing out the ignition tumbler in a 1992 dodge caravan?

Hi,
First remove the plastic 2 piece shroud around steering column so as to gain access to the housing the tumbler sits in. Find three Phillips screws to remove in holes in the lower piece.
Turn the ignition key to the Run position. Insert a small tip screwdriver in the access hole on the bottom of the housing to push the spring-loaded tab which will free the tumbler so you can simply pull the tumbler out with the key.
Installation is the reverse. Be sure tumbler with key inserted is set to the Run position.
Depress spring-loaded tab, insert tumbler into housing hole with tab down. All the way in,
Turn key to the Lock or turn it off.

1991 Dodge Spirit ignition problem

The "SPRING-BACK" Action is Originated in the Ignition Switch itself (THE ELECTRICAL SWITCH) I think that is where you should Look. On these models, the ignition lock and ignition switch are removed as an assembly. Refer to IGNITION LOCK .
Disable airbag, refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Service and Repair . After procedure has been completed, rearm airbag system.

On these models, the ignition lock and ignition switch are removed as an assembly.
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Remove tilt lever.
  3. Remove three Torx column cover attaching screws, then the upper and lower column covers.
  4. Using tamper proof Torx bit tool No. 440-TX20H or equivalent, remove three ignition switch mounting screws.
  5. Carefully pull switch away from column. Release two connector locks on seven terminal wiring connector, then disconnect from ignition switch.
  6. Release connector lock on four terminal connector, then disconnect from ignition switch.
  7. Remove ignition lock from ignition switch as follows:
    1. With key inserted and switch in Lock position, use a small screwdriver to depress ignition lock retaining pin flush with lock cylinder surface.
    2. Rotate key clockwise to Off position. Ignition lock should now be unseated from ignition switch assembly. Do not attempt to remove ignition lock at this time.
    3. With ignition lock in unseated position (lock bezel approximately 1/8 inch above halo light ring), rotate key counterclockwise to Lock position, then remove key.
    4. Remove ignition lock from ignition switch.
  1. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
    1. Connect two wiring connectors to ignition switch. Ensure switch locking tabs are fully seated in connectors.
    2. Install ignition switch on steering column.
    3. On column shift models, shift lever must be in P position and park lock dowel pin on ignition switch assembly must engage with column park lock slider linkage.
    4. On all models, verify ignition switch is in Lock position (flag parallel with ignition switch terminals).
    5. Apply a dab of suitable grease to flag and pin, then position park lock link and slider to mid-travel.
    6. Position ignition switch against lock housing face. Ensure pin is inserted into park link contour slot.
    7. Install ignition switch retaining screws and torque to 12-22 lb-in .
    8. With ignition lock and switch in Lock position, insert ignition lock into ignition switch until it bottoms.
    9. Insert key, then while carefully pushing ignition lock toward ignition switch, turn key clockwise to Run position.
    10. Check for proper operation on ignition switch in all positions.

At the starter, clean the wire at the solinoid, that's the small wire. This is just a push on terminal on most models. That should get you baby crankin! Frankster016
