Sweet smell with unseen coolant leak or burnoff

Mostly outta the car. If i drive with the windows down and back up i sometimes smell it. temp stays below the first 1/4 line if i am moving but jumps straight up if i am stopped too long like in a drive-thru or long stoplight. only once did it hit 3/4 on a hot, humid florida day. opened the radiator a couple of weeks ago and saw my coolant appeared low in spite of me having a flush back in december. added more to radiator and into the res. but am still smelling it. neighbor stinks it's a head casket but would like knowledgable advice before giving a mechanic a chubby for unneeded repairs.

Do you smell it in or out of the car, and how much coolant and how often do you have to add to the system?

You will need to pressure test the system when the motor is cold, that way you can see where the leak is without it evaporating on the hot motor. Look for bad water pumps, and intake gaskets on those cars. Dexcool usually eats em up.

Loss of coolent

First I would look at all the hoses for pinhole leaks. The test the water pump by trying to move the radiator fan back and forth(on a longitudinal engine, not transverse). Turn on the engine and see if there is any coolant leaking from the front of the coolant pump. If so, the coolant pump is going bad. Otherwise, can you smell the sweet smell of coolant in the cab? If so, you probably have a leaking heater-core,

Sticky fluid on passenger floor

That sweet smell is usually, radiator coolant. Most likely you have a leak on the hose or the heater core is damaged and leaking.

Leaking coolant

Is the coolant clean that leaks out? Have you put a newspaper under the car to try and isolate the leaks location by the drip stains? Likely spots are the engine water pump and hose connection points at have worked loose. If the leak seems to come from the rear of the engine it may be a leaking heater core, in that case you should have a kind of sweet smell (the smell of vaporized coolant) in the cabin when the heater is on.

Smell and white smoke coming thur ac vents

Your heater core has developed a leak (of coolant). The smell is the "sweet" smell of ethylene glycol,
a component of engine coolant. The white smoke is steam coming from the heated coolant evaporating.
The coolant is dripping into your duct work under the dashboard, and apparently being evaporated
out of the ductwork and sent into the passenger compartment, meaning its a small leak.
When the leak gets worse, you may get wet carpet on the front passenger side.

I have steam coming out my vents and it smell sweet

Your heater matrix has a hole/leak in it. The sweet smell is your coolant boiling off.

As its connected to the engine cooling system, look for any coolant leaks in the engine bay.

If you can't find any and its just a small hole you could try putting some "Radweld" in your expansion tank, maybe a couple of applications. If that doesn't work it'll need stripping down and repairing.

But you must keep an eye on your coolant, its going down, too low and your engine will overheat and seize up.

When i crank up my car theres a funny smell that comes thru the vents. When I lift my hood theres coolant on the hoses. Theres no coolant on the passenger side floor what could it be?

Hi:
If the smell is somewhat "sweet" smelling, it is most likely coolant. You probably have a minor leak in the heater core, that isn't bad enough to see in the passenger floor area yet.
Rest assured, if you smell it, it is leaking somewhere.

Heater immediately fogs all windows and there is a sweet odor in the cab of 2003 Buick Rendezvous, defroster works fine, but will not clear the windows after heat is put on

Sounds like a possible heater core failure(hole in it) the smell indicates to me the coolant(anti-freeze) is leaking into the passenger compartment.
Check the carpet in front of the front passenger seat for moisture, this would confirm heater core leak.
Good luck !

Sweet smell inside car and moisture on inside of windshield

This is probably a leaking heater core, which will need to be replaced. The sweet smell is the coolant (antifreeze).

Strange smell when heat is on heat works fine just strange smell also have to add coolant about every three months

sounds like you got a heater core leak, the heater core is what the coolant flows thru into your heater box in your dash to allow you to have heat, sounds like the core is leaking,by the smell and the low coolant i would say it is leaking, youll need to replace it before it blows out, you dont need 2 gallon of 200 degree coolant flowing into your car,,,
