the key tumbler may be defective or the shift lock mechanism, do you have to put your foot on the brake in order to move the shifter without the key in the ignition? car willnot start does the lights come on do the accessory work lights, radio, can you shift from park neutral does the vehicle go into neutral have some one push it to see if it moves you may want to check the neutral safety switch or the gear indicator

2002 ford expedition stuck in park the gear shift would not come out of park

replace the neutral safety switch or also try rocking the vehicle forward and back and then trying the shifter again.if it is parked tight against a curb and had rolled forward just a little bit and came to rest with the vehicles weight against one tire this will cause a bind and won't let it out of park this is especially true of 4x4 vehicles as the mileages get hire I hope this helps and good luck

When i have my 2001 ford ranger in drive and turn the air conditioner on it blows a fuse. I think it has something to do with the airbag. Have you ever heard of this?

The problem is most likely a faulty neutral safety switch located down on the side of the transmission, and that switch does a lot more in that Ford vehicle than just start the engine in neutral or park. If you do replace the switch be sure to align it while in neutral, and you should see the alignment marks on the neutral safety switch. Here is an image of the neutral safety switch.

There might also be an exposed wire that is getting grounded when you move the shifter into drive, and the wire could be under the dash or under the vehicle, and you should shift the gear shifter and look at the moving linkage parts to make sure that they are not moving or contacting any wires.

Reverse lights on 2003 ford expedition wont work why

On the side of the transmission where the gear shifter attaches is a multi-function switch that controls the ignition switch solenoid (which won't let you take out your key till it's in neutral), the reverse lights and the shifer release solenoid (which won't let you put it in gear until you hit the brakes. It is probably bad. It doesn't cost a lot and it referred to as the Neutral Safety switch.Since it's under the car it takes a lot of abuse and they sometimes just go bad. Make sure when you put on the new one that it's in the same general position as the old one so you won't have sticky shifter syndrome or sticky key syndrome. Good luck.

1997 Ford Escort - car has power but will not start. It did the same 2 days ago, but after putting shifter in reverse and then back in park, the car started. Now it won't.

sounds like you may have a bad safety switch on your shifter, if you have intermittent problems with it starting and it changes with movement of the shifter, it's probably the safety switch. The next time it doesn't start, shift to neutral and try it, if it starts, its the switch. The switch is designed to keep the engine from starting if it's in gear, but it will let you start in neutral and park.

Transmission wont go into park

Get help, have helper hold set parking brake and hold foot brake, pop shift cable off of linkage bracket on trans, try to shift it by hand. Only starting in N may be broken internals on neutral safety switch.

Engine will not turn over or start when in park with key on.

You linkage is working properly it sounds like, especially if the indicator for "D, R, N", etc are lining up. However the linkage or the neutral safety switch may need to be adjusted. More than likely, it's your neutral safety switch.

The brake pedal release has nothing to do with the neutral safety switch when switching gears.

The brake pedal release is just a safety to prevent you from pushing the gear shifter accidentally. Actually, you should be able to start the truck without holding the brakes.

If the neutral safety switch is bad or misaligned, it'll do exactly what you're describing. If pulling it down in neutral starts the truck, then that's a sure indicator.
