thanks for that info. The knocking is from top of engine, was indicated to me it could be hydrolic valves not getting oil, reason for flush question. didnt want to do till understood if would work. as sounded too good to be true, i do exspect to pay for repairs, and would be costly. however have concidered gear box/engine replacement as mate has same car (3.2ltr though) that he is wreckin, and offered me the engine

Hi I'm litoshop if your getting a knocking noise and it's coming from the bottom of the engine then you have a serious problem you may need to over haul the engine the more you drive it the more chance you have in breaking the engine my suggestion is not to drive it get it to a mechanic sorry bad news but your in time to salvage your original engine good luck. if this information has been helpful please let us know thank you

Hi I'm litoshop if the tapping is from the top of engine then it is the lifters by performing a oil pressure test you'll know if the problem is oil pressure if the oil pressure is normal and your getting the tapping noise then you my have a slush problem and the lifters or not getting enough oil pressure it's very dangerous to do a flush on a engine that has a lot of slush could clog the oil screen and then you have a bigger problem the best bet is take the valve covers off and the crankcase and clean it out from the top to the bottom and you'll see how bad or if it's worth fixing but if it's up to me the easiest and the fastest and cheapest way would be replacing the engine if you get a good deal on an engine do it good luck and thank you if this information has been useful please let use know

Can a blocked oil filter cause a bearing knock on my renault megane 2004 and if so how much to overhaul the motor

oil filters have a built in bypass valve that operate when the filter becomes blocked to allow unfiltered oil to service the engine
Engine /bearing will not be the result of a blocked filter from lack of oil
worn lifters will make a sound if the oil viscosity is not high enough for a worn engine and a simple test here is to do an oil and filter change using a heavy grade oil ( penrite 40w-60)to see if the noise stops
knocking at idle can also be a symptom of worn gudgeon pins(wrist pins / little end ) bushes and this can be tested by increasing the idle rpms slightly to see if the noise goes
incorrect ignition timing ( too far advanced) causes piston slap(knocking) at idle so that can be tested by the installation of a timing light
tests using a mechanical oil gauge that are carried out by an accredited service shop with experience on your make of vehicle will determine if bearing / pump is the problem as far as oil goes , while a wet/dry compression test will determine the engine condition
after these tests are done then you will have information as to what has to be done to fix the problem

Bear tracker whinning noise when in gear not at idle slight rod knock shavings in oil filter

if you have shavings in the oil filter they are also being circulated through out the engine oil system. this along with the whining noise you have bearings that are bad and the engine will need to be torn down and rebuilt.

I have a 2004 jag x-type 3.0l v6 auto tranny w/70,000 miles and it has a lifter knock i believe? the noise gets louder and faster when i rev engine... what can i do about it?

three squirts of washing up liquid ,has to be fairy not a cheap one ,half a litre of diesel all added to the engine oil ,run for a couple of days as normal and the noise will diminish ,Then change oil and filter but use a 10/40 detergent oil suitable for a turbo diesel ,the cheapest you can buy ,now change oil every 6000m with a oil filter every third oil change .You have a noisey hydraulic tappet nothing more which is fairly common on this engine and its caused by not changing the oil enough and using expensive long life oil which causes problems like yours by allowing the combustion residue to accumulate within the internal workings of your engine ,

I have a 2002 grand marquis,140 thousand miles...i change my oil on the regular,i take good care of the car..my problem is on my last oil change i noticed a slight tapping noise like the valves where...

a knock sensor is basically a resistor and a spring, and what it does is it reduces valve ping. Valve ping is when the fuel is not properly burned and tries to explode before the valve is fully closed and it will make a pinging noise when under load or at higher RPM. If the sensor is bad it can cause detonation, detonation is when the fuel explodes before the valve is closed and can cause a cracked, or exploded piston, bent valves etc. Your problem does not sound like that of a bad knock sensor, predominantly you will only hear the "ping" under load and not at idle and if it was bad your check engine light should be on. this sounds more like a rod knock. change the oil again and use only AMSOIL and an amsoil filter, amsoil is proven to last longer than any other oil, 600,000 miles without a change, or a filter change.

Tapping sound from engine

Maybe from lack of oil changes or over rev of engine.
Go to the auto parts store and buy good oil and filter and get a can of Marvel Mystery Oil (red can) and make sure the engine is 1 quart low on oil. Pour the Marvel in with your oil and let the engine idle for up to 2 hours. Then do an oil and filter change. The Marvel is a heavy detergent that will clean up your engine and wash most of the dirt into your old oil filter.Be nice to your engine!

Oil pressure gauge reads normal when first starts. as it warms up, gauge goes to zero. If I rev engine, gauge goes back to normal.

Two things...when it reads zero, is there any engine noise (tapping or knocking)? After you rev the engine does the pressure read normal at idle and function normally, or does it go back down? Either way, you should not drive the vehicle 'till you have a mechanical gauge (yours is electro-mechanical) put on there and the actual pressure is tested. The condition may be a bad sending unit, a bad bearing or possible obstructed oil pump screen. The repair is obviously different for each one and the price is as well.

No power. slight miss at idle.

did you unplug the wire behind the distributor before you timed it?
if not try that and retime it then plug it back in also you might go ahead and replace the knock sensor. I know you checked it

Ticking noise

Hi Patricia,

When you drained the wrong oil, did you replace the oil filter too? It can retain a quart or more.

That ticking sound, when does it occur? Hot? Cold? Idle? Hi-rev?

What type of oil did you put in? If it was for only a short time, it shouldn't have caused a tick/knock.
