Question about Volkswagen Jetta

147000K on my 2002 jetta TDI. I put it in reverse after a few tries. Car wouldn't move in reverse. Gave it a shot of gas and it lurched back. Had to put the brakes on so I wouldn't hit another car. No problem driving in "drive" Put it in reverse (from drive) to back it in the driveway. No problems. Put it back into park and it wouldn't go into reverse. Gear was stuck at park. Now they are saying I need a new (rebuilt) tranny and a new (or used) torque converter. This car has not been abused. All services up to date. They want $5000.00 for tranny rebuild and torque conv. no engine lights came on. no previous indication there was a problem

147,000K on my 2002 jetta TDI automatic transmission. Not tiptronic. Thanks for your advice so far.
The oil has been drained so i don't know what color it is/was.
I was show some metal shavings in the pan.
I'm thinking of trading it in for a 2006 Audi quattro A4 79,000K ($28000.00 sticker price). They will give me $6000. for my TDI with no tranny.I negotiated to $21,700.00 so far and they will give me a free warranty 2 years or 40000K. (The original Audi warranty only goes to 80000K.) When at a red light in the Audi, there is a vibration under the driver's seat. Could this be rotors? Otherwise drives like a dream. I am a female looking for the best financial solutions. Love the Audi tho so far.Don't want to buy more problems.

Take it to any other transmission shop, preferably one that can rebuild transmission. Most transmission shop would rather do a transmission swap since it's easier and they can make more money. A good transmission shop will only repair the worn part if it's more economical then swapping the whole transmission. It sounds like the transmission line pressures solenoid has gone bad and needs to be replaced, you can before hitting the gas to go in reverse, wait till the transmission line rises again and let the engine idle rev rise the line pressure slowly so you do not damage any other internal parts. Good luck and call around and have then to a transmission pressure line test, which would indicate if there is only a solenoid that needs to be replaced. Good luck friend

Hi I'm litoshop I get a lot of these problems in my shop it does not sound like a bad tranny this sounds like the linkage on your transmission is off set and when you can't get the shifter out of parking the you can have a problem with the brake light switch this switch controls the shift lock like in any vehicle if you don't press on the brake you can't get it out of parking and if you are pressing on the brakes and it don't come out of parking then the brake light switch is not working and also check the oil level the the transmission you can see if you need to over haul the transmission by the color and smell of the oil if the oil smells burned and is dark brown then you have a problem if it's red or pink and looks normal then theres no internal damage. if this information has been helpful please let use know thank you and good luck

check your half-shafts going from the transaxle to the wheel hubs. I suspect that one of them has broken off.

My 2003 jetta will back up only after rpm's increase

If your car has an automatic transaxle it is defective and needs to be rebuilt. Don't keep doing what you are doing or you will ruin some of the internal parts and that will cost you more money, it's also not good for the engine.

Driving jetta hit the brakes, tried to use gas and nothing happened. pulled off the road, shut the engine off, tried to turn it back on and nothing happened

You need to be more descriptive. What did the car do when you pressed the gas. Did it bogg or do absolutly nothing. Did the lights on the cluster come on when you tried to press the gas

Count the shifts. It sounds like you are going into overdrive and staying there. Overdrive is too long legged to pull most hills unless you are really flying.. good luck

2000 jetta does not shift into reverse

is this going from park?? if so, it could be the module inside the cover where the shifter is...this is the piece that tells the shifter when the brake is pressed and allows it to shift.... check that out and let me know if u have anything else....

My 2002 Jetta TDI will not always go into reverse. When this happens I put it in 1st then back to reverse and many times it goes right in reverse. It happens whether it is cold or warmed.
