SOURCE: i own a mercury sable v6 i want to replace the freon

The port closest to the firewall would be the low side where you charge the line with R134 refrigerant. Use gloves and clear goggles to protect your eyes and skin when connecting. The quick connect fitting will ONLY fit on the low side so you can't connect it to the wrong connector (size won't match if you select the high side near the front of the car).
Place the AC on MAX while you charge the system. I recommend purchasing a quick fill kit that has the gauge built into the charging line so you can see the pressure when you let off the trigger. Don't let it approach the red or system will stop working (overcharging the line is not good) These can be purchased at auto parts stores and department stores.

Coolant is coming from around headgasket and top of the manifold on both sides of v6 with only 55,000 miles. It's a1997 Mercury Sable. Please Help?

Sounds like a blown gasket caused by overheating. If it is, you need a torque wrench and a workshop manual to determine the head bolt settings and slackening / tightening order. You also need to get the head skimmed by an engineering shop before refitting. If the engine is running OK, you might just get away with radweld as a temporary solution.
