Question about 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT

1999 grand am 3.4l keeps getting air into cooling system. Bleed air out and its fine for a week then it runs hot. Bleed air and it starts all over again.

It may have a blown head gasket, may have a shop test it to confirm.

Most likely you have air trapped in your engine, particularly in the heater loop. You need to properly bleed the air out of your radiator cooling system. The hot and cold blasts of air coming from first hot water followed by air.
Read up on how to bleed air out of your radiator system. Some systems are very difficult to bleed.
If after doing a good bleed of the radiator system the problem returns, you may have a bad head gasket or other leak in your cooling system which is injecting air into the cooling system (radiator/water cooling system).

If it has an electric radiator fan (not AC fan) The radiator fan is not working. Possible coolant sensor or switch.

Engine gets hoat some time, no heat from heater. top hose seems hot to touch lower hose is cool. Drained radiator few weeks ago and problem began


Theres a strong possibility being you just changed the coolant a few weeks ago that theres air in the cooling system not allowing the coolant to cirrculate properly, look at your top radiator hose is theres a small bleed valve at the top of the thermostat housing when the upper hose attactes to? If so loosen the bleed valve and allow the cooling system to purge the air out of the system you can tell when the air is out of the system when a steady stream of coolant starts to flow out of the bleed valve, if theres no bleed valve take the top radiator hose off of the engine side and allow the cooling system to purge the air out through the top of the engine that way, but it definatly sounds like theres air in the system not allowing for the cooling system to cool properly...

1999 alero changed thermstat and the car will intermitantly overheat there seems to be no pattern.


BLEED AIR OUT COOLANT SYSTEM.WAIT UNTIL ENGINE COOL DOWN.REMOVE COOLANT OVER FLOW PRESSURE CAP.IF YOU HAVE 3.1 OR 3.4 ENGINE OPEN AIR BLEED SCREW ON WATER PUMP BYPASS HOSE.OPEN BLEED SCREW.WATCH COOLANT IN OVER FLOW AS YOU OPEN BLEED SCREW COOLANT WILL DROP IN OVER FLOW JUG. AS IT DROPS CLOSE BLEED SCREW ADD MORE COOLANT IN OVER FLOW JUG DO THIS UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL STAY AT COLD FULL MARK.WHEN DONE TIGHTEN BLEED SCREW DONT OVER TIGHTEN IT OR IT WILL STRIP OUT BREAK.CRANK CAR UP UNTIL THERMOSTAT OPEN THAT WHEN TOP RADIATOR HOSE GET HOT.WATCH COOLANT GAUGE,IF ENGINE TEMPERATURE RISES TURN OFF ENGINE WAIT UNTIL COOL.REMOVE RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP USING A RAG TO KEEP FROM GETTING HANDS SCALED.ADD MORE COOLANT IF NEEDED WHEN ENGINE COOLANT STOP DROPPING IN OVER FLOW JUG AND ENGINE DONT OVER HEAT AIR IS OUT OF COOLANT SYSTEM.

How do you bleed a cooling system on a 1999 pontiac grand am?


The most common way to bleed any cooling system in a newer car is take off the radiator cap (cold to warm engine NOT HOT) Start your engine turn your heater on max and let the car warm up I like to put some bounce in it and bounce the car it seems to help work out some air bubbles. as it reaches full oporating temp somewhere in the middle of the gauge start adding coolant along the way to maintain the fluid level at full. carefull to not over fill

1999 grand prix gt it started to get really hot then the oil light started flashing the it started to knock but this only happens when it get hot can some one help me out


you have a cooling system problem the engine is getting to hot and the oils is thinnig out to much to protect the engine DO NOT keep running the car like this replace the thermostat and waterpump do a cooling system flush before you do this

get the antifreeze that mixes with any color you should be fine also make sure you bleed the system get the air out of the cooling system there should be a petcock to bleed it with,crank let get operating temp.open petcock till steady stream runs out close pc your done.

1999 Grand am GT keeps trying to overheat the heater blows cold and then it"ll kick heat on cooling the car down i've had intake gasket thermostate water pump replaced and the radiater flushed twice alond...


sounds like your either low on coolant or a possible blown head gasket, the head gasket will create too much pressure in the cooling system and blow your coolant out of the overflow and fill the heater core with air causing the heater to be cold or your just low on coolant due to a leak or improperly filled cooling system. so fill the cooling system resovoir while vehicle is running while keeping the level at "full hot" line until the fans have come on and gone back off (a/c and defrost must be off) then drive on the interstate until the heater gets hot. if the vehicle tries to push the coolant out while filling the system headgasket is a definite possibilty. BE CAREFUL COOLANT GETS HOT!!!

see if your radiator is getting hot it may be blocked, if it is hot in some spots and cold in others it is blocked, also have you bleed the cooling system after you did work to it
