I have brake fluid leaking, when i press the brakes, out of the bottom of what i think is the height sensing proportioning valve


it is a load proportioning valve that adjusts the proportion of brake pressure according to the load on the vehicle
best to get a new unit and replace it then bleed the air out of the brakes

BRAKES FAILED AFTER DRIVING THE CAR FOR SOME HOURS. PEDAL GOES ALL THE WAY IN. ANY PART YOU TELL ME PROBABLY HAVE BEEN CHANGED BUT THE PLUMBING.


If you have replaced brakes recently, have they been bled?
If yes, check that bleeding screws have been tightened properly and top up brake fluid.
If above OK, check for leaks at either cylinder.
The problem appears to be a lack of hydraulic pressure.

I only have front brakes on a 1982 GMC 1500..I get no fluid pressure to the rear. Is there a reset on the proportioning valve?


There is no reset on them. What will work sometimes is to completely remove the brake light switch assembly from the valve and slowly push and release your brake pedal a few times. Then reinsert your brake light switch. If this doesn't work you will have to replace the proportioning valve. New price will likely scare you so head for the scrapyard.

There is no way that your proportioning valve is going to affect your engine idle. However, a leaking master cylinder and the resulting damaged diaphram in the vacuum brake booster will. Remove the master cylinder and look for brake fluid in the booster assembly. If there is fluid in there, replac both the master cylinder and the booster.

The brake light is on on my 1987 Chevy Truck. Its from the proportioning valve, not the parking brake. Is their any thing to check, or just replace the valve?


The proportioning valve simply ensures that the front brakes are applied before the rear brakes are, to prevent sideways skids from loss of rear traction. The valve also serves as a warning light when one end, either front or rear, of the system has deficient line pressure. Inside the valve is a cylinder, and a piston that belongs in the center of the valve cylinder (when fluid pressure on each side is equal). When one side of the valve (front or rear brake system) loses pressure (like from a leaking brake line), the piston gets pushed to the low pressure end and makes contact with a switch terminal that turns the light on.The trick to turning the light off is to figure out which end, front or rear brakes, the piston is on, and then bleed the other end to center the piston and turn the light off. Too much pressure on the brake pedal will cause the piston to go past center to the opposite end, and a close watch on the brake warning light will reveal that as the lamp will flicker once while the piston passes center.
Gently depress the brake pedal (requires an assistant) with a bleeder open and close the bleeder as soon as the assistant (brake pumper) sees the light go out. If he sees the light flicker once bleed the other end of the vehicle to go back towards center.

The proportioning valve is probably stuck you will need to bleed the front brakes as well in order for the valve to recenter.Check for brake fluid pressure at the master.have someone press and hold the pedal while you loosen the lines at the master.If you do not have much fluid coming out of either one,you will need to bleed the master first.

The rear brakes seem unable to bleed. i think the proportioning valve bad.


You are correct in assuming the proportioning valve,but it may not be bad,if it detects,loss of fluid pressure,it will shut down those brake lines.Try bleeding the master cylinder,then the wheels,and you may have to do it a couple of times,this will allow the proportioning valve allow the wheels with fluid pressure,if this was at all helpful,please rate,thank you,

No fluid to rear brakes on a 1992 Lincoln Continental.  Rear brakes stopped working. Pulled rear wheels and found surface rust on disks. Raised car, spun tire and push brake pedal found no friction...


check at the proportioning valve--some have a pin that sticks out from the side, when bleeding the brakes try to push that pin back in. But first check to see why this happened--fluid leak to rear wheels, brake hoses cracked and air getting into the system??????

A master cylinder has a restricted compensator valve what problem will i most likely find with the pedal?


If your valve becomes defective then the brake pressure ratio to the front and the rear brakes will change. You will see or feel a difference. the front-end may nose dive or lock-up. The rear brakes may react the same way.

I have a Jeep Wrangler 1992. Replaced rear axle with a Ford 8.8 axel rear end and installed all new brake rotors, callipers, hoses, metal lines, forward brake discs, hoses. Have bled reapeatedly....pumping...


The proportioning valve most definately can be the problem. Did you change it or is it the original? (A disc/drum system uses a 70%front/30%rear braking ratio, whereas an all-disc system is alot more even). I would first bleed the master cylinder. Then I would 'gravity bleed' the rest of the system by opening the bleeders on all 4 wheels. Do not at any point let the m/cylinder go dry. Also, do not touch the brake pedal.
Continuously check all 4 bleeders, when clean brake fluid with no bubbles at all is running from a bleeder, close it. When all 4 wheels are done, recheck the fluid level and you should be OK.
Pump the pedal to 'self-adjust' the rear calipers, then re-check the fluid level.
Any problem after that means you either have a loose connection (it's possible for a tiny leak to let air in, but not let fluid leak), a leak, or you need a new (disc/disc type) proportioning valve. I would try Summit Racing myself. Good Luck!
