It could be a few things, most likely it's the actuwater under the battery or the cabil hookt to it. If not it could be the vacuum lines FRUM the trany or the shifting Moyer.

the connections near the front axle that activate the motor to engage the system aren't melted? That's a comon problem for that body style. If there good, sounds like it could be that motor itself. To figure out if it's you motor or transfercase, jack up the rear end, have a friend inside shift into 4 wheel drive, or try to, and put it in gear and apply some gas. If the front driveshaft is turning then it's something with the front end. If not, farther back in the system.

SOURCE: 1995 GMC 2500 won't shift into 4 wheel drive,

I have a 94. Had the same problem last year. If it is the same as mine there is an actuator located on the front differential. When you pull the lever to put it in 4h this thing acts like a push rod and pushes the gears in place. It screws right in and there is a plug. I bought mine on-line for about 80 bucks. The car guy told me they do wear out becuse the get all the road grime and the part is gas filled. I'm not a mechanic but that is what I had to do.

SOURCE: 4 wheel drive will not engage on my 1989 gmc

actually that first soultion is wrong it is correct on smaller pickups but on the full size pick ups they use a differnet sytem
there a electric actuator on front axle
there be two elctrical plugs on front axle u want the bigger of the two other one is just to turn the 4 wheel drive light on
un plug actuator then remove actuator after it removed plug it back in but leave it out of axle turn key on and shift down to 4 wheel drive the actuator should move out if it dont that your problem if i does move this isnt your problem it either the tranfer case or in front axle

you may have a bad frt diff seliniod, try unpluging seleniod and putting into 4wd, if fuse doesnt blow then you know its the seleniod.also take a look at the wiring at the transfer case for any chafed wires, some of these trucks use vaccum also to operate 4wd check the vacuum switches for shorts, ive enclosed a wiring diagram to help you ,hope this helps ,good luck.04178a0.gif
