Question about 2002 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

3 Answers

Driving down the road, car stops working, almost like running out of fuel. "Battery" light comes on. Toe it back home, hook up jumper cables, engine will turn over but won't fire...just turns. Took it to a dealership and they said the battery was bad and the timing belt may be as well, but I though the engine was a zero tolerance engine which wouldn't even allow it to turn over if the timing belt was bad? Please help so I dont get screwed by the dealership.

My car was dying in the middle of going 40 miles an hour as well. the battery light would come on, the triangle in the circle light would come on and then die. no power steering, no brakes to speak of.....i have had the alternator replaced, the battery replaced, vacuum leaks fixed, some other work which i cannot find my paperwork on, etc, etc. the problem was fixed by changing out the alternator and battery.
but now, my check engine light comes on, we fix the problem, i drive away it comes on again, we fix another problem, i drive away, it comes on again.....this car is bankrupting me.

Sounds like a fuel problem to me , could also be bad fuel ? have you check the following: fuel cap on properly, fuel filter changed , Check fuse relay. also would be a good idea to change the battery if it is still the original one.

Driving down the road the battery light came on,

Your charging system stopped working (that's what the light means if it comes on while the engine is running), and now the battery is run down too low. Take your alternator off and have it tested. You could or should also have the battery tested, but it will need to be charged up first on a battery charger. If it is 3 years old or more, you may need a new battery. First have the alternator tested at a parts store- it is a free service.

Kia Sorento

It could be a corroded ground cable. follow the neg cable from the battery and see where it bolts to on the body remove the cable and clean and sand the area reattach the cable and spray some battery terminal protector on it. I've seen this a lot on older sorentos

Kia shuts off while driving

If recharging the battery makes it start/go again then its a fault in the charging/battery circuit.
Solution 1. Check alternator. It should read over 14 volts across the battery terminals with engine at tick over. If its below that its the alternator thats faulty
Solution 2. Try a different battery known to be good. any size will do for a couple of days. Batteries sometimes only last 2-3 years. yoyrs could have been on since 2006!!!!!!

Im driving down the road, then no power.power was still on but no engine rev. h ad to toe it home. what do you think??

It sounds like this could be a number of things. It is difficult to tell just by what you have stated... but I would check to see if there is adequate fuel pressure. I would also check to see if the engine is getting spark. If you can give us more details, we can help you more.

Thanks for asking on FixYa!

Take off jumper cables it dies

You're alternator is dead. Once started the alternator should generate enough power by itself to keep the engine running.

While driving engine shuts off

I had the same issue with another GM and never got it resolved except by replacing the battery.
Finally put it one that keeps good voltage while park or running.
Wall mart sells a $20 alternator and battery checking device you plug into a power socket.
Its digital read out is better for my eyes than the dash board one and has idiot color codes red yellow and green,

Some batteries seem to get shorted cells and that lower voltage can lead to engine shutdown even while driving. You would think a good alternator would keep the engine running but these new low rpm designs with heavy load...

This is all experience and I do not claim to be a GM tech.

My check engine light comes on and then goes off this has been going on for several weeks. What is the cause?

It could be a loose or bad fuel filler cap. Make sure your filler cap is in place and tight.
It also could be the grade of fuel you are getting, sometimes just a different grade of fuel, or lesser quality of fuel can make it come on for a time and then go off.
You can disconnect your battery for up to 20 to 30 minutes to clear the codes and reset it.
If it comes back on after you do this, you need to have a diagnostic tool hooked up to it and have the codes read, and act accordingly.
