Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Poorly maintained jeep in need of advice.

Hi, I've just been given a 1996 jeep cherokee sport 2.5l it's got a few problems and I need some advice, one is a bad earth (where is the main earth point pls) which even though it charges quite happily, when parked the starter motor grumbles about turning over (battery appears fine) and two, it appears to overheat on a good run and when I pull over boiling pressurised coolant blows back out of the coolant fill bottle. It has previously been used for short journeys of around 30k return over slow, dusty rough roads and has been 'cough' service once yearly if lucky so rarly became hot enough to show this fault.
Any advice you can give me on starting to get the old girl back into a fit condition?

My 1996 cherokee sport runs hot, flushed out the radiator with a liquid cleaner and a water hose, and replaced the thermostat

If you have a thermometer you can do a poor mans check of your radiator. Go across the fins and record the readings if there is a big difference in readings you have at least a partial blockage and your radiator will need rebuilt.

Also check to make sure that your water pump is in good shape. A bad water pump cost me an engine on my 1995 Grand Cherokee.

When I installed a separate transmission cooler it not only solved problems with my transmission it also brought down the overall temperature my engine was running at.

1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport. My low beams will flash on and off along with the dash lights after a few minutes of driving. I am now forced to drive with my high beams on.

Sounds like a relay may need to be replaced. Check all of your fuses. Check the relays. I believe the Jeep has a relay for the headlights I could be mistaken. It would be my guess. But also, how long since you replaced the bulbs. A friend of mine had hers flicker when it was a "friendly reminder" to replace. But when you change something, it's always smart to replace the fuse that goes with it.

Best of Luck
