Question about 1997 Mercury Mountaineer

1 Answer

No headlamps on 97 Mountaineer

Have parklights and highbeams when you pull back on lever but no lowbeams. There are no blown fuses and I replaced the headlamp relay in the relay module, could it be the function switch.

On my 1998 mercury mountaineer My lowbeam headlights dont work at all when I turn the lights on.my highbeams work now only with me driving holding the light back.what is the problem?

Either the headlight switch or the relay.

Since the relay is easy to replace, find it under your hood in the fuse box. The owner's manual should guide you to where it is. They are usually plugged in and can be extracted by pulling on them. Replace it to determine if it fixes the problem.

If not, then, alas, it is the switch (most probable problem),. Since it's a big job to replace (steering wheel must be removed), have it done and be prepared for an estimate of at least $200. Get estimate from dealer as it may involved air-bag restraint system.

97 cherokee, lowbeam headlight won't go on?

Try putting your tilt steering wheel all the way up and see if it comes on. Ors did that and we had a pinched wire in the steering column.

No headlamps on 97 Mountaineer.

Buy 1 bulb and insert in each socket one at a time. If the low beam does not work on either side you know it is not because of the bulb. Then you will have 1 extra bulb for emergencies. Ask at autoparts about a headlight relay for lowbeam. When you wrote that highbeams work on pullback you did not say if they stay on high. You have "Flash to Pass" for highbeam which can be a different circuit. The automatic headlight switch is yet another set of contacts to go bad. You should set "auto" to off so you are not fighting this feature when testing. Good Luck
