If you've owned this car for a while ,you probably know the fan turn on point is very high on the gauge...about 3/4 the way up which is actually quite close to the red zone. The beauty of the gauge is when the fan does come on,it will drop to below half in a couple minutes which tells alot about the cooling system in general. If it has the ability to drop fast ,under half you have a well running cooling system for the most part. Your fan turns on via a coolant sensor signal to the control unit which then signals a relay to energize the fan. In short, you probably need this coolant sensor which is a $21 dollar part...ask for pn#21025106 at any Saturn dealer..the thermostat is connected to the block from the lower hose connector on front of engine which is held with 2 bolts...ask for pn# 21006335...install these two parts and you should be good to go......good luck

Pull the thermosensor and plug it back in, turn the car on, take a small propane torch to the bottom of the sensor. Should turn the fan on in about 2 minutes. if not replace thermo

It will be at the back of the head close to where the radiator hose goes. The T stat is where the bottom hose attaches to the block. When the fan sensor (two wire) is crossed the fan should kick on.

A pontiac montana ? There are three relay's that control your cooling fans ! unplug what sensor ? The engine coolant temp. sensor is an input to the PCM - engine computer . When temp. reaches 213 degrees the PCM energizes the relays , depending on low or high speed . Using a scan tool to see if the PCM will turn on the fans an checking engine coolant temp.data is the right way to diagnose this . Relay Driven Dual Cooling Fan Diagnostics

97 saturn is overheating i changed the temp sen and still over heat if i unplug it the fan comes on can i drive with it un pluged

You might have changed the wrong sensor. There are two. The cooling fan sensor will be closer to the radiator, either plugged into the radiator or the thermostat housing. One sensor is for the temp gauge and the other is for the cooling fan, good luck.

Why would the car be overheating if the coolant reservoir is full?

A. Your thermostat is bad
B. Your cooling fans are not operating correctly
C. Your radiator is dirty enough to prevent good airflow from front to rear
Try checking C first wash the radiator out from the engine side with a high pressure hose, this will take about 10 minutes to do a good job, the local car wash is a great place to do this

Do your cooling fans come on? At any time? You should be able to hear them run with the hood open

If these 2 don't solve the issue it is time to change the thermostat

High Idle 2000 Saturn S series

Definately have a sensor problem...but that may not be all. You can blame the sensor issue on the idling problem. The overheating in park is likely one of 2 things, provided you have adequate coolant. #1 a sticking thermostat or a bad coolant temp sensor not activating your fan at idle. What you should do is have your diagnostic codes read in order to take care of the sensor issue. Most national parts chains such as Auto Zone or Advance will do this at no charge in hopes of selling you a sensor. Good Luck! I hope you find this to be very helpful.

cooling fan or heater fan? if its cooling fan then the coolant temp sensor is bad

Temp gauge goes high. Radiator leak just the

It could well be a faulty thermostat- test or replace same.
Could also be a blocked radiator core, - check coolant or airflow is not restricted,
Ensure any radiator leaks are repaired,
Ensure coolant level is correct, without airlocks - bleed as necessary on re-fill,
Check operation of cooling fan - ensure fan runs at appropriate engine temperature - if not check sensor switch and associated relay operation.
Thermostat is located at the end of top radiator hose where it connects to engine housing.

Cooling fan

Here are the cooling system diagnostic steps...First does the cooling fan kick on (with engine hot)? If not, check the fuse, if good then check the thermoswitch in the radiator (it's about an inch and a half in diameter located on the lower part of the radiator with two wires ) by disconnecting the wires and touching them together (again, with engine hot...at least 190 degrees) if the fan comes on, you have a bad switch. If not connect a 10 gauge jumper wire from the battery to the fan itself (there are three terminals,,, one high, one low and ground). With power direct from the battery (and a ground wire, if necessary) fan should run... if not replace the fan assembly... if it does run then you have a bad cooling fan relay (under the dash, I believe). Hope this helps... ;-)
