1997 Grand Voyager transmission slipping

1997 Grand Voyager has 235000 miles and is coming out of gear while in motion. It also makes this whining noise, the higher the RPM's the louder the noise. Do I need a new transition?

Just got back from some runing around, checked the transmition fluid level and it's good, a bit too full if anything. Could my pump ge going out? no burnt smells, I did notice that when I wiped the fluid off that there was a small amount of black mixed with the red fluid. I s this normal wera and tear?

Low on fluid!!!!
thats why its HUNTING !! & the whine is the pump !
Check it for burnt smell & disclouration!
as that could indicate burnt clutches & or bands!
Cheers Rob.

go get it checked as it seems like the clutch or bands material is what you see in the fluid! & it may be making the valves in the valve body stick & the pump may be failing etc.

Whining is generally associated with a pump failure. When the pump wears out, pressure required to operate the clutch packs inside the transmission gets low and permits the clutches to slip. Slipping results in the clutches overheating and burning the fluid. Unfortunately, the only real way of correcting the problem is by having the unit re-built. If you can't afford to do that immediately, you could add lucas conditioner and sealer. That may help a bit 'till you can get the work done. (no chemical will repair worn parts though...it only buys you some time)

1997 grand voyager stalls in reverse

my 97 Plymouth Grand Voyager used to stall when I backed out of my driveway and would also stall comming to a stop light or stop sign. Remedied it by replacing the EGR Vacuum Valve little black round disc looking thing that attaches to the intake located just to the left of the brake fluid resevoir (three vacuum lines and an electrical connector holds it in place) Yw Kevin C. MOST LIKELY HAS A PLUGGED TRANSMISSION FILTER.
TORQUE CONVERTOR CLUTCH FAILURE COMMON.
CHANGE TRANSMISSION FILTER AND ROAD TEST.
IF NOISE IS GONE AND RUNS NORMALLY, CHANGE TORQUE CONVERTOR AND RESEAL TRANSMISSION.

Have a winding sound coming from transmission.

I do not believe there is a DIY solution to this problem, You could try Lucas brand transmission fix. Would only help the problem temporarily. You may have a band in the xmsm going out, or a shift valve. I know 45000 miles does not seem like much on a rebuild, but something is going on inside the case. The Lucas xmsn fix is really thick fluid and it sticks in the valves and makes them fill faster to get to the next gear, or as I understand it, may fix whining for awhile, but when it returns you will have to take it to a transmission shop.
