Question about 1988 Toyota MR2

Got a 2nd hand O2 sensor cause my one wasnt working the management light is on constantly will this solve the problem i also have lost lots of power tooi hope this sorts it out. do i need to tune my car after it is fitted or will my car go back to normal once the new part is fitted?

    okay i got a new part a Bosch part and when i turn the key the dash lights come on and once the car starts all lights go off and then the management light comes back on what could this be?

    If the 02 sensor is the problem you may have a plugged cat as well all you can do is try it a 1988 is pretty old and the cat being bad is a real possiblity. If to much fuel is fed into the engine and the unburnt fuel is sent threw the exhaust pipe it will kill and plug the cantalitic converter, you could remove it and check it by looking threw the cat you will see honeycombed shaped squares and when you hold it up under a light you should be able to see threw it. Is that the A3 engine in it?

    I never could fathom electric windows ????

    ecause they are just something else to go wrong! but your arms are always gonna work! so wind up windows are no the way im going!

    it all = no stress & no bills lol

1- o/d light is transmission issue- if miles in excess of 135000- change fluid and filter and cross fingers- known issue with windstars

I have an 02 s10 it has been having a code for #2 o2 sencer heater not working could this be my problem?

the O2 sensor heater circuit is just what it says it is a heater fo the O2 sensor, it is there to make sure the sensor stays a constant temperature, the sensors like a lot of heat, if the heater is not working the sensor will not give proper info. about the amount of O2 ( oxygen ) in the exhaust flow which could cause the engine to run to rich or lean in either case the engine will not perform as good as it should and can cost you fuel mileage, it the worst case sanario the heater can short to the sensor return wire and cause all kinds of bad things to happen like cook the ECM, i suggest you replace the sensor, the #2 sensor will be the one after the catholic converter.

Anytime you make a change to any part of the emissions system, its best to disconnect the
battery for a few minutes. If you don't, the computer retains the fault code and it will usually keep
coming back. When all power is lost to the computer, it will do a complete scan when reconnected
and engine started. Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes then reconnect and see what happens.

There are several types of O2 Sensor codes. There can be "Lean O2 Sensor" codes, "Rich O2 Sensor" codes, "O2 Sensor Slow Response" codes, or "O2sensor Heater Circuit" codes. The specific code that is being set changes the way you must go about diagnosing and repairing the problem. I will say however, that in about 80% of all the O2 Sensor code problems that I have had to diagnose, the O2 Sensor itself was NOT the problem. The O2 Sensor was only reporting a problem that was actually caused elsewhere. O2 Sensors are the final checkpoint in the engine management system. I think of them like a report card. If the O2 Sensors are right, the rest of the engine management system is right. If the O2 Sensors are not right, the rest of the engine management system is probably not right. (Except in the 20% of the cases where the problem is actually being caused by a failed O2 Sensor)

Your O2 sensor needs to be replaced. These sensors constantly out put voltage from .1 volts up to 1.3 volts, your sensor is stuck in the high range. It is the first O2 closest to the engine.

My 01 hyundia santa fe sounds like a golf cart it sounds like power steering but thats not the problem also when i accelerate it will jolt and will only work in 3rd or 2nd gear so i haft to take off in 2nd...

Did the 'Check Engine' Light come ON? Whenever the 'CHECK ENGINE' light comes on, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). These codes identify the particular engine management system which caused the light to come on. You'll need to use/find an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic) Scanner to retrieve any code which have been stored in the ECU computer. Check engine light was on. OBD II scan said both pre-Cat 02 sensors running lean. Also shows P0000 code which is a undefined code. S dash light comes every few days then transmission will stay stuck in 4th...

The pre cat sensors running lean does not mean they need to be replaced. They are are detecting a symptom. You need to know why.

If you are using a basic scantool (code only) you need to look up the P0000 code.
I thought this an odd code. I looked it up in my Autotap unit and it does not exist. The lowest # P (powertrain) code I have listed is P0016.

A regular scan tool, won't scan transmission or body codes, mu Auto tap doesn't either. You need a Tech 2 from the dealer for transmission codes.

First some history. The first O2 sensor was introduced in 1976 on a Volvo. California vehicles got them next in 1980, then federal emission laws made O2 sensors virtually mandatory on all cars and light trucks built since 1981. And now that OBD-II regulations are here (1996 and newer vehicles), most vehicles now have multiple O2 sensors, some as many as four!
The O2 sensor is mounted in the exhaust manifold to monitor how much unburned oxygen is in the exhaust. The signal from the O2 sensor tells the computer if the fuel mixture is burning rich (less oxygen) or lean (more oxygen).
A lot of factors affect the richness or leanness of the fuel mixture, including air temperature, engine coolant temperature, barometric pressure, throttle position, air flow and engine load. Other sensors monitor these factors too, but the O2 sensor is the master monitor for what's happening with the fuel mixture. Problems with the O2 sensor can throw the whole system out of whack.
The computer uses the oxygen sensor's input to fine tune the fuel mixture for the best balance of power, economy and emissions. The engineering term for this type of operation is "closed loop" because the computer is using the O2 sensor's input to adjust the fuel mixture. The result is a constant flip-flop back and forth from rich to lean which helps the catalytic converter operate at its best and keeps the average fuel mixture in proper balance to minimize emissions. It's a complicated setup but it works.
If no signal is received from the O2 sensor, like when a cold engine is first started (more on that in a minute) or the 02 sensor fails, the computer orders a steady, rich fuel mixture. This is referred to as "open loop" operation because no input is used from the O2 sensor to fine tune the fuel mixture. If the engine fails to go into closed loop when the O2 sensor reaches operating temperature, or drops out of closed loop because the O2 sensor's signal is lost, the engine will run too rich causing an increase in fuel consumption and emissions. As you might have guessed, that will set a code and turn on your check engine light.
How does it work? The O2 sensor produces a voltage once it gets hot. The sensor compares how much oxygen is in the exhaust to the oxygen in outside air. The greater the difference, the higher the voltage reading.
If you ever replace an O2 sensor (and if you're a DIY'er this is something you will do eventually), its important to remember that the O2 sensor needs to "breath" outside air to work. So don't put any grease on the sensor because it could block this air flow.
An oxygen sensor will typically generate up to about 0.9 volts when the fuel mixture is rich and there is little unburned oxygen left in the exhaust. When the mixture is lean, the sensor's output voltage will drop down to about 0.1 volts. When the air/fuel mixture is balanced or at the equilibrium point of about 14.7 to 1, the sensor will read around 0.45 volts.
When the computer reads a rich signal from the O2 sensor it leans the fuel mixture to reduce the sensor's reading. When the O2 sensor reading goes lean the computer reverses again making the fuel mixture go rich. This constant flip-flopping back and forth of the fuel mixture occurs anywhere from 2 to 7 times a second at 2500 rpm on OBDII vehicles, depending on what type of fuel injection system they have.
The oxygen sensor must be hot (about 600 degrees or higher) before it will start to generate a voltage signal. Many oxygen sensors have a small heating element inside to help them reach operating temperature more quickly.
Ok – that was a lot of info on what they do and how they work. The next thing to know is that trouble codes relating to O2 sensors are very common. But you really need investigate further before replacing an O2 sensor just because you got that trouble code. Armed with the information above on how often the O2 sensor "flips" back and forth and AutoTap or another scantool that allows you to monitor O2 sensor voltage, you can be certain whether the O2 sensor itself is really the problem. These sensors can be pricey, so don't just replace them the first time you see that trouble code!

The O2 sensors are expensive, diagnose what really is going on.

O2 sensors WILL NEVER CAUSE A LOSS OF POWER, u are looking in the wrong place, sounds like a fuel starvation problem or a defective MAF, the O2's are just seeing this and setting a code..

Replaced #2 injector, truck ran fine. Parked and

Had Mustang that lost power and had black smoke coming out of the tailpipes. The O2 sensor had an intermittnet fault which caused a lot of problems as nobody could find it. Purchased a cheap code reader and just happened to check it when the O2 sensor was causing a code. Not sure if you're having the same problem but, something to think about. Good luck.
