There are lots of possible causes. It could be either of the following:

1. Fuse
2. Valves in the transmission
3. The engine
4. The Oil - maybe it needs oil change
5. Broken vacuum hose.

Under the car, look for a missing or broken vacuum hose. It's supposed to connect to the transmission about 2/3 the way back on the right side. This hose may have fallen off, have a hole in it, or be disconnected from the vacuum source in the engine.

Hope these info helps and have a great day!

Look at the transmission control relay in
the Power Distribution Box, The Transmission Control Module and the
    wiring between them.

First thing to check and also the least costly when you have this problem is the transmission oil level, as missing just a few onces of oil in an auto transmission can cause some pretty weird problems. If the oil level is OK, then second most common and least costly is what we commonly call the PRNDL switch, or position switch, which is located on the transmission casing and is visible from the outside of the tranny without taking it apart. Basically, the switch tells the car what gear it is supposed to be on considering the shift lever placement. If the PRNDL switch is OK, then unfortunetly the problem resides within the solenoid valves in the tranny and will require costly parts and labor. So if this is your case, depending on the year and mileage of the vehicule, it might be a wise choice to start looking for a newer vehicule.

High rpms while driving

Also, your problem description is a bit confusing. If the engine rpms are too high, it could also be due to faulty auto transmission...the trans not shifting into higher gears. That is relatively complex diagnosis and fix that could quickly go beyond your capabilities. But if that is the issue, you could try changing the auto trans fluid. It may help, but if the auto trans has not been properly serviced over its life, it could be too far gone for this to help, but it is worth a try.

Have a 1996 f-350 7.3 power stroke w/auto trans, shifts fine from 1st to 2nd then in and out from third back to 2nd ,took to transmission shop trans fine but no power going to trans also odometer jumos...

HI, I have a 350, brand new in one of my old skool muscle cars with a 350 trans that used to be a drag car trans.
We changed the gears in it to street gears (4:11 to 3:55 gears) and every once in a while it will not go to the high gear, so I pull over, put it in park then back to driving and it works beautiful each time!!!!
Nothing is wrong with this car at all, brand new engine and trans in a oldskool muscle car!!!
*** The point to the story is; nothing mechanical is "PERFECT", only God's creations right. ;)
So the moral is more than likely the problem is from the area of the "engine to the trans"(that junction) and I will say your trans gears may have problems, one look doesnot make it true!
Get a second mechanic to look at the trans inside...
Also, if you have too much fluid in the trans it will all be floating in trans fluid and will give you the same effect in any gear....

No high gear in 3 speed auto trans in 98 caravan

You must have a 3.0L engine to have a 670T 3 spd trans, if so, with high mileage trans, the diff bearings will start to wear out under torque and send fillings into the governor mounted on the tranfer shaft, giving you all kinds of shifting problems, also worn front clutch disc pack and seals will do it, also total failure of the front clutch will give you no reverse, 3rd gear needs front and rear clutch to work together, pull the pan off and check for fillings and material, if lots , pull the trans for overhaul. need more info, just ask RDJRP.

2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo hesitates in 2nd gear when cold

Is it manual or auto trans? If manual the gear lube is thicker when cold and the syncronizers tend to stick and not slide free for grind free shifting or for locking into gear.
If Auto trans if the jeep is warmed up setting then cycle the gears before driving. If that helps then the fluid is not getting through the valve body properly. It could be metal in the body or filter or cold seals are letting fluid by til the seals warm, expand and hold pressure. I'm assuming trans fluid is good, not old. One item that can lead to poor cold shift in an auto trans is a bad torque convertor. Since it seems to be a second gear issue the second section of the trans could have a bad seal. In an auto trans I'd take to a shop and have a cold pressure test done. They will tell which one is the problem.
