Question about 1999 Land Rover Discovery

99 land rover disco overheating!

Rover had a rough idle a few days prior upon (warm) startup and overheated 3 days later...it will run fine for ten mins. or so but then temp gradually rises...turning the heater on will keep it from overheating which makes me think(thermostat). but, it should open within a few mins(not ten+)...so leaning toward waterpump!?...also havent yet been able to pressure test cylinders for possible head gasket problem. also cooling fans seem to work some of the time. should they only run when the a/c is on or when the engine is well into normal operating range and even after the engine is turned off...ive kept up with maintaince for years, oil, air filter, plugs, wires fluids, and various sensors that are prone to blow on these 'ol discos....HELP. im planning on doin all work myself so the more technical the better!

I'd go for thermostat. They are wax type and if they don't open fully, this would give the symptoms you describe. Simple to do on those old V8's so I'd try that first. Unlikely to be water pump, unless the vanes are corroded because you didn't put anti-freeze in it (unlikely as you look after it) - otherwise, even there is nothing to go wrong apart from the bearing and seal and unless you are losing water, then it can't be that. Have you bled the system recently? They can get air locks, so there is a little bleed tube from the top of the intake manifold, that normally pumps a bit of water into the expansion tank if I remember rightly (I have worked on so many of those V8's but a while ago) - check it is pumping water out of that hose. Otherwise thermostat.

I agree with starting with the t-stat first, then moving on wards .... however, the water pump on these trucks can and DO fail.

Start with the cheapest part and that would be the thermostat. They are easy to replace and that appears to be the issue. They do wear out or stick.

I have bought a 99 land rover discovery and it is overheating

From practical experiences of heavy trucks, this problem is created by poor coolant flow thro' the Radiator Core. Flush cleaning the Rad. or decontaminating the exterior air flowways will not cure the problem. My recommendation is a Recore or after market replacement.

99 Firebird still overheating after repairs and antifreeze

overheating is most likely a bad thermostat, but the coolant loss is a second big concern. Does the exhaust look like steam? You could have a cracked block and the coolant is leaking into the engine. Also check the oil for contamination.

Sounds like something is overheating then and possibly a sensor. Not familiar with Rovers but might be a problem with the CAS and/or CPS which tells the ECU the motor is running and when to fire. Also maybe the IAC is bad and when you go from throttle to idle it can't control it and allows it to die.

99 land rover discovery intermittant problem runs rough then runs fine

Having a similar problem with my Disco. Talked to a couple guys I know who done a lot of work on them and you might check the O2 sensors and/or the spark plugs. My Disco kinda pulses during acceleration especially when you first crank up. When it warms up is smooths out. If that is what you mean by running rough. If your more chugging like the car just doesn't got it, it more likely a fuel flow issue.
Last thing cause it would be the most expensive. Your computer could be crapping out. The Disco doesn't have a mechanical distibutor. It is all done by computer and that could going.
Hope this gets you started.
