Question about Lincoln Town Car

1997 lincoln town car battery drain

Battery drains over 1-2 days but intermittently - Took it to a Lincoln dealer they had it for 5 days but couldnt find any thing wrong and the battery did not drain that time. Had it back for 6 days no problems but today the interior lights came on like normal but as soon as I turned the key to start everything went dead. Charged the battery for approx. 15min. (fast charge) and it started and seems fine for now. Wondering if you have had similar problems and have found the solution.

It's possible you have a leak in the air suspension and the air compressor is trying to keep it aired up which is draining our battery. Disconnect the power from the air compressor for a couple of days. If your battery still goe down, then the problem is somewhere else. If you do have aleak, then the air suspension will probably be bottomed out by that time, but your battery should still be good.

The battery drains down in 48 hrs. I had a Ford mechanic look at it but he could not find out why it happens to my 1997 lincoln town car. Jim

I will try to help. First, find out if the Cruise Control was recalled for your car. Have a dealer run the Vin#. The bad ones never shut the power off.

Next, rear window defrost switches can short without the light indicator being lit up. This is a hard one to diagnose because it cycles every startup. Also bad ignition switches can leave the ignition on. Its silent and is not visible.

If none of the above, you have 2 ways to test the car.
Use OHMS or VOLTS. With volts you put the meter between 1 battery cable and the battery. You can short out something with this method. I favor the OHMS method, which you disconnect both battery cables and put the meter on the cables.

You will have to pull fuses with either method. Its time consuming but once you write down the fuse placement and size you will eventually disconnect the grounded fuse. Then trace the system, like a bad window switch or trunk pulldown.

I think you will find the aftermarket Cat Conv. is the source of your problem, but without hooking up to the factory test equipment at my disposal at my Ford dealer this at best and educated guess based on 20 years of emission related work, I am a Ford certified master electronics technician
