My 1986 Toyota PU 4x4 (22RE) is fuel injected and also has problems starting up. The fuel pump has never been replaced and I want to replace it with a new one. Where is it located and would it be hard to repair myself? What do they cost? And is it ok to purchase an after market fuel pump oppose to getting one from the dealer?
The fuel pump for your truck is in the gas tank. They cost about $142 at Autozone. It's not that hard if you have a basic ability with tools and a little help to raise and lower the tank. Of course you'll need to drain the tank before you start.
Most likely in the gas tank. depending on your mechanical abilities its not really difficult to replace. You will have to drop the tank or remove the bed. Once you drop the tank with the least possible amount of fuel in it, you will see a round plate with 2 or 3 fuel lines coming from it. This is the top of the fuel pump. You can probably get one for around $100us or less.
