Sounds like there is a short in the wiring to the oil pressure sender unit.

Low oil pressure warning

It sounds like the oil pressure sending unit is going bad. Sometime they're called oil pressure switches. That would be my first guess. Why its proportional to 1/4 segments of gas portions makes very little sense. Fuel level sending units work as semi circular resistance sweep. Not in segments the only thing that segments fuel protions are the lines on your instrument panel gauge. Anyhow check the fuel pressure switch.

Oil lights stays on

If the engine is not making any noise then it is likely not a real oil pressure problem. Just to make sure have the pressure checked by a shop with a mechanical test gauge and if found to be inspect replace the sending unit and that should in most cases cure the problem. I assume this is a pressure indicator.

Low oil pressure warning keep coming up but my oil pressure is fine

Could be a few things, first Get it checked with a mechanical gauge to test low motor oil, clogged oil filter, bad oil pump, clogged oil sump (pick up tube) or bad oil sending unit. Then replace sending unit sensor.

1984 chevrolet cavalier cs oil pressure warning light on but runs fine and oil level is ok. What could be the problem. Is there a sending unit that can be checked?

if the oil level is good and clean, and there is no noise in the motor then it will be the oil pressure switch that is bad and needs replacing.

Hi,i have a 1988 toyota conquest. the oil light is continously on. im thinking its the oil pump. anything else i can check before that? when rerved high, the light goes off. then, when at low rerving,it it...

CHECK OIL PRESSURE.DO A OIL CHANGE AND FILTER CHANGE SEE DOES OIL PRESSURE IMPROVES.IF NOT OIL PUMP FAULTY.WORN ENGINE BEARINGS CAUSE LOW OIL PRESSURE.OIL PRESSURE SHOULD BE 4.3 PSI AT IDLE THATS WHAT MANUAL SAID.

NO OIL PRESSURE warning came on suddenly. I stopped the engine and started it after 10 mins. It was running fine until the same warning came back. Dip stick reads full. SOMEONE HELP!

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. I understand your concerns. No oil pressure is one of the worst things that canhappen to an engine.

The can be caused by a bad oil sending unit or a problem with the sending unit wiring.

The really is only one way to troubleshoot this and that is to read the oil pressure with a direct pressure gage. Most of the time that involves installing a direct reading gage at the oil sending unit port and verifying the actual engine oil pressure. If it is normal the most probable failue is the sending unit.
If the oil pressure is really low then the following things have to be checked:

1. Oil pump
2. Camshaft bearings
3. Main crankshaft bearings
4. Rod end bearings
5. Oil pump pick up tube in the oil pan

You can pull a valve cover an watch for oil flow but it is NOT going to tell you the OIL pressure.

The only easy fix is that of the oil sending unit and associated wiring. Everything else requires disassembly of engine parts for inspection of clearances.

Oil pressure gauge

Low oil pressure is generally caused by internal engine bearing wear, not a "bad" oil pump... Pumps become "bad" when debris from a failed component gets into it, causing damage. (exception being pressure regulator spring/plunger assembly becoming clogged with gunk in engines that do not get proper maintenance; likely not your case)
Were there any tapping noises coming from engine when pressure was low? If not, The most common problem is the pressure sending unit, sending bad info to the warning light. If passage going to it or internal passage is gunked up, this problem usually disappears when oil is changed. sometimes the sender just goes bad, in which case, change it.
To get a proper diagnosis on your problem, have someone put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on it. This will read the actual oil pressure and will tell you a lot about the condition of your engine!
I have never seen a valve job that corrected any oil pressure problem. I mistrust anyone who would even think that!!!
Mlinimum low pressure at idle is 15 psi Max is about 60psi running (higher can explode an oil filter) A reading of 15psi indicates the beginning of a problem. although considered "safe" it is not good.
