1988 Blazer Crank but will not fire

S10 1988 Blazer 4.3L 4X4

It has been really warm (100F) the last couple of days but I have had no problems. I drove my Blazer home after work. Turned off my car for about 5 minutes while I ran inside my house. I came back out to try and start the Blazer but fired up only to sputter out and die. This happened twice. I came back 1 hour later and now it will only crank (no sputter or actual firing up of the engine). I checked the fuel pump fuse and it is ok. Any suggestions?

I do not know how to check for spark or for fuel flow and pressure. I am by myself and don't have someone to crank the car while I ground a spark plug. My tools are also very limited. Any suggestions on how to easily proform these tasks would be great. I have sockets and screwdrivers only.

I know my information is limited at best but do you think it is a fuel or spark problem?

  • bfee317 Jul 28, 2009

I can do the fuel test really quick. Be right back.

Where is the fuel line that goes into the carb? I have removeed the air filter and the surrounding house for the air filter but I do not see a fuel line????

  • bfee317 Jul 28, 2009

It is the forced fuel injection into the carb if that makes a difference?

Left or right side? Will the hose just slip of or will it be clamped?

Both have a bolt and the screws into a fitting. Do you have a email address I can send you a picture?

But is it getting fuel to the Carb? and have you checked to make sure you have fuel pressure? Also spark?

well you can put a stripped wire inside of the boot that goes over the spark plug and bring it to the hinge or any metal part of the vehicle where you can see it and then turn the engine over while holding onto the rubber part of the wire you stripped back and see if it sparks. Just as you are turning it over pull the wire away from where you have it grounded that will show a spark while turning it over then you can see if it at least has spark.

You can take the line off of the fuel pump where it connects to the carb and turn the key to crank the engine and see if it sprays fuel out of the line but be careful not to shoot fuel all over the engine. Put it in a glass jar or some kind of a container while you crank over the engine.

Should be a rubber hose or metal line coming right into the side of the carburetor.

This does have a carburetor right? probably on the passenger side or rear of the carburetor if it is carberated.

How about the fuel pump...are you getting the fuel to the cylinders? Is the fuel making it through the fuel line through the fuel filter? Drop a few drops in 1 cylinder, if it fires, you have a fuel problem. Does it turn over? If not check out the motor starter!

If I'm not mistaken, there should be a module or relay. Not for sure where it's at. Heard of these going out and not being able to switch into 4 wheel drive. I know on a 200'? Ford F-250 they have a motor on the side of the transfer case. That switches it into 4 wheel. Signal from 4x4 switch is sent to module then to the motor that engages the transfer case. Hope this makes sense. Hope this helps.

sounds like ignition module inside of distributor cap under distributor rotor button.these do go bad and can easily be replaced.strong suspicion from your details that this is the culprit.
