Have taken wheels off but no visual problems seen. Also by turning wheels when jacked up, no sound heard (when driving sound not always heard either). Dealer says it is behind dashboard which is to me very unlikely as sound buzzes along with the turning speed of the wheels and driveshaft. As car driven less than 5000 km cannot imagine worn break-pads. Maybe faulty wheel bearing?
Wheel bearings could be the problem. While moving and steering to the left, if the noise increases, it could be the RIGHT wheel bearing. And the opposite when steering to the right. I wouldn't rule out brake noise though. Rotors almost overnight get a surface rust and must be worn off when first driving in the morning. Very common in high humid areas.
Hi Victor, thanks so much for your prompt response and expert advise. Finally had another appointment with the dealer. This time they looked more serious. However, still I am not content with their findings and opinion AND noise is still there. The mechanic drove along in the back and concluded that it is wind in the rear right wheel. He adjusted the Hatchback and thought the noise was a bit less although for me it is the same. Can you share the dealers opinion???? (btw he said he checked the wheel bearings and are OK). Thanks Victor for your thoughts, Jan

Yep - our cars are known for eating wheel bearings (I have a 99 2.8 quattro). I just did my rear left, which was howling, and now that it is quiet, I can hear the rear right going bad. The B5 chassis cars (96-01) are known for wheel bearing, control arm, and cruise control failures almost as much as they're known for fantastic driving and excellent traction in bad weather.

You have a bad front wheel bearing on the left side because you say when you turn right the noise goes away, because when you turn right the suspension lifts up on the opposite side and releives some weight on the bearing causing it to quiet down. No it is NOT a DIY repair unless you have some pretty extensive tools. the quickest easiest and least expensive way to fix this is to go to a wrecking yard and buy a steering knuckle for the left. it will have a wheel bearing already pressed into it and all you have to do is replace the whole thing and you are done. do not open any brake lines or hoses to do this job just gently press the brake caliper piston back about 1/2" so it will fit over the brake pads when you reinstall.
please rate this advice a fixya if you feel I have provided excellent service.
