Question about 2000 GMC New Sierra 1500

I had an issue with the passlock system. The

I had an issue with the passlock system in my 2000 GMC1500. The vehicle would start for 1 or 2 seconds and turn off. I put a new key and tumbler in and now it starts and stays running but the message center keeps showing the Battery and Security light. Now it says I have no gas and wont show what gear its in. I know there is gas in it, I just put 15 gallons in and it didn't move the gauge. Is this a Passlock ssue or is it everything happening at once?

    I did not. But does that matter where its no a chip key? Also would that cause the Shifter not to show what gear its ina dn the gas tank to be empt y. I hope so. LOL

Did you have the BCM programmed to the new key? the dealer has to do that.

    it is a transponder key, and yes that could be a BCM issue.

Passlock
The passlock system is a vehicle theft deterrent system which deters drive-away vehicle theft by disabling engine operation if the ignition lock cylinder is not rotated with the proper mechanically cut key.
The passlock system is made up of an ignition switch assembly, passlock sensor, body control module (BCM), instrument panel cluster (IPC), and a powertrain control module (PCM).
The ignition switch contains a magnet mounted on the lock cylinder and a passlock sensor assembly which consists of security hall effect sensor, tamper hall effect sensor, and output resistors. A drill proof metal shield is also staked over the sensor housing.
The passlock sensor mounted to the ignition switch assembly is located inside the upper right side of the steering column. The passlock sensor contains two hall effect sensors: a tamper hall effect sensor and a security hall effect sensor. The tamper hall effect sensor is mounted on top of the security hall effect sensor. Should someone attempt to defeat the system by use of magnetic experimentation, the tamper hall effect sensor will activate first.
The BCM has the passlock controller integrated into it which controls the majority of the security systems logic. The BCM reads the data from the passlock sensor continuously. If the data is correct and has been received by the BCM within a specified time, the BCM will send a coded password to the PCM. The PCM will then allow the fuel injectors to operate.
The coded password for the security system is sent from the body control module to the PCM via the class 2 data link. If the password is correct and received within the specified time, the PCM will allow the fuel injectors to operate.
The IPC contains the security telltale. The security telltale has three modes of operation, OFF, FLASHING, and ON.
SECURITY TELLTALE will be off if:

30 Minute Re-Learn Procedure
  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
  3. Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
  4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
  5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes ( the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock?"¢ Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK).

Someone tried to steal my 2000 Chevy S10 pickup. They tore up ignition. I purchased a new ignition cylinder which came with 2 keys. I tried to do the 30 minute relearn but the security light does not stay...


You don't need to program key's with this anti-theft system , there is no chip inside . Did you get a correct lock cylinder. . On this system there is a pass lock sensor in side an the lock clinder has a magnet !
Passlock™ Sensor
The passlock™ sensor is inside the upper right side of the steering column. The passlock™ sensor contains 2 hall effect sensors. The tamper hall effect sensor is on the top. The security hall effect sensor is under the tamper hall effect sensor. Both of the hall effect sensors monitor the magnet of the lock cylinder through an opening. The tamper hall effect sensor is physically placed on top of the security hall effect sensor. This arrangement enables the tamper hall effect sensor to engage first if an intruder attempts to bypass the passlock™ sensor by placing a large magnet around that area of the steering column. There is a tamper resistor inside the passlock™ sensor in order to help prevent tamper to the system. Passlock™ equipped vehicles have a selection of 10 different security resistors ranging from 0.5K ohms up to 13.6K ohms. Installing one of the security resistors inside the passlock™ sensor will generate a unique passlock™ code. All 10 combinations of the passlock™ sensor have the same part number. However, you cannot simply replace the passlock™ sensor and expect the system to operate properly. Always start by performing the Diagnostic System Check first and following the instructions.
Body Control Module
The Body Control Module (BCM) contains the theft deterrent system logic. The BCM reads the passlock™ data from the passlock™ sensor. If the passlock™ data is correct, the BCM will pass theft. The BCM will then transmit the code password to the VCM/PCM.
During the tamper mode the vehicle may start. The vehicle will then stall. If the BCM receives the wrong passlock™ data, the VTD will immediately go into the tamper mode. The tamper mode will lock-out the vehicle fuel injectors for 10 minutes. The SECURITY indicator will flash while the VTD is in the tamper mode.
If the passlock™ sensor sends a correct password to the BCM when the ignition is in the ON position, the BCM will send a fuel enable signal to the VCM/PCM. The VCM/PCM will not disable the fuel due to any BCM message for the remainder of the ignition cycle.

You only need to do a relearn if one of these are replaced
Use this procedure after replacing:
• Passlock™ Sensor
• BCM
• VCM
• PCM

Did you replace any of these ?

I have a 2000 jimmy with short in ignition system how do u correct


These vehicles come standard with passlock antitheft security. This has to do with your key and ignition. If its failing, the truck will start for 1- 5 seconds and then stall. If this sounds like your problem, go to this link.

When i turn over the ignition it starts for a second then dies. why?


the problem is the passlock .This system allows starter operation,then kills the injectors 1-2 seconds after startup.The key cylinder housing has a small magnet that rotates past the passlock sensor.The sensor is powered and detects rotation.This is a Anti-Theft System for 2000 jimmy

Pass lock problems


Your Passlock may need to relearn the ignition keys, if the ignition lock has gone bad like my in-laws Grand Am Gt, here is what i did so they will not get stranded any more. Buy a Passlock by pass module for around $70.00. You can order one from GMPASSLOCK.COM in the mean time try resetting the Passlock. Good luck

Ignition keys relearn takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure
1.) Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
2.) Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start.
3.) Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF.
4.) Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds.
5.) Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes.

How do you turn off security system


You can't turn it off, but you can buy and bypass module.

Why the 1500 silverado does run good but stalls and then after turning the switch of and recrak it does starts ,runs good for a few minutes and stalls againg? note I replace the fuel filter but did not...

GM Passlock I & II Information

Please study the following information carefully WHEN INSTALLING REMOTE START systems on a 1996 or later GM car or truck.
Introduced in 1996, GM has changed the VATS anti theft system to Pass-Lock system. This is a similar device to the VATS system, in that there is a resistor present during the start cycle. However, in the PASSLOCK system, the resistor has been placed inside the ignition switch, instead of the key. See the GM V.A.T.S page for more information.
To remotely start a car with this feature, you must bypass the PASSLOCK system. There are two methods of doing so.. The first, is to permanently bypass this system. This is the easiest method for accomplishing your task. The second way, is to temporarily bypass the PASSLOCK, by introducing relays into the system, which retain all of the features of the system, while allowing your remotes start module to bypass it automatically during a remote start cycle.
Vehicles effected
(1996 and newer): N & J body cars, such as
Pontiac Sunfire and GrandAm Passlock-1
Chevrolet Cavalier Passlock-1
Buick Skylark Passlock-1
Oldsmobile Achieva Passlock-1

1997 or newer
Chevrolet Malibu Passlock-II
Oldsmobile Cutlass Passlock-II

1998 or newer
All trucks , SUVs and Vans Passlock-II

It is important to pay special attention to the fact that there are many different ways of achieving the same goal. There are actually 2 different Passlock-II systems. On the next page, there are tests to establish which type of passlock-II your car has.

Relays shown are standard automotive 5 pin spdt relays, available from IEI.
A multi meter is required to measure the resistance values. Accuracy is important within 5%.

Once the value of the resistor is measured, a resistor of the same value +/-5% must be purchased (Radio Shack, for example). You can also use a Potentiometer (POT), which can be adjusted to the same value of the resistor in the ignition switch.

pslc1.gif Passlock-I bypass procedure....

1: Remove the top and bottom shrouds from the steering column.
2: Find the 3 wire ribbon cable, coming from the ignition switch, containing White, Black, Yellow (Sometimes White, Black, Black). These are THIN wires.
3: Locate the Black 6 position connector on the LEFT side of the steering column, right above the ignition switch position. There is a BLACK (Thin) wire in this connector, called "Bulb Test", which shows Ground with ignition in the Off position, OPEN in the "Run" position, and GROUND in the "Crank" position.
4: Turn the ignition switch to the "Run" position. Do not crank the car.
5: Cut the Thin Yellow wire and strip both ends.
6: Without cutting the Black wire, expose some of the copper.
7: Using the ohmmeter, measure from the Yellow wire (the end coming from the ignition switch), to the exposed Black wire and record the value. Measure more than once to assure you have the right value.
8: Acquire the same size resistor and 3 relays, and perform the connections shown in the diagram below.

There are 2 types of Passlock-II systems. To determine which system you have, follow these instructions;

1: Locate two wires, which are THIN and are in the main ignition harness.. Orange/Black (or Black) and Yellow.
2: Cut the Yellow wire, and strip back some of the insulation from the Orange/Black (Or Black) wires.
3: Turn the ignition to the "Run" position ( don't crank the starter). Measure and record the value measured from the KEY SIDE of the Yellow wire, to the Black/Orange wire.
4: Turn the key to the "Crank" position and release. Now read the value again.

Trying to reset theft system


Can try doing a  relearn process, it is pretty simple and will take 30 minutes, if it'll work for you at all since your problem doesn't sound like a computer issue.
30-Minute Learn Procedure
1. Turn on the ignition, with the engine OFF.

3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF.
4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds.
