Re: when battery is connected the starter engages
You have 2 wires touching somewere. Possable burnt together. Check the wires at the soleniod one is ground one is hot from the switch. remove the wires hook up battery with a 12vdc test light or volt/ohm meter ck for voltage on the wires. find the hot one and trace it thru the harness cut any ties or remove and coil like cover you should find the spot where it is burnt together or just rubbing.

Make sure battery has a full charge and connections good. Make sure engine isn't froze up. Two voltage circuits at the starter motor, one comes from battery, hot all the time. The other goes hot with key in the crank position. It grounds through the engine block.
Any testing at the starter make sure tranny is in park or neutral and parking brake is set.
The starter motor itself may have a problem? You may be able to remove starter lay it on the ground, hook up jumper cables properly from starter motor to battery. At the least it should kick out the drive gear and spin, of course that is a no load test. Some of the national brand autostores will test the starter for you, if you take it to them.
first of all check the battery and starter connections for tightness and corrosion etc , disconnect the battery before checking the starter wiring connections , then try new battery if no go starter most likely needs changing , i should also advise to be thorough you should check the ignition system from switch to starter before you can positively say its the starter
Well, if your starter starts to turn when you hook the battery cable up, then you have hooked the cable to the wrong post on the starter. You have two large posts and one small post on the starter solenoid, the battery cable goes on the large post that has nothing else hooked to it. The other large post should have a large braided cable going into the starter motor housing. If the starter still will not turn the engine over when it is wired correctly then you will need to look closer at the flywheel ring gear.
Remove the small wire from the solenoid and hook up the battery. If the starter engages the solenoid is stuck. If the solenoid does not engage the starter with the small wire removed, check the small wire for a short to power.
Yes the neg cable is grounded at the starter bolts and also at the frame. Do you have power coming from the starter relay down to the starter solenoid with the key switch in the start position ? Do you have headlights when you try to crank the engine ? Have you tried cranking it in neutral ?
battery good? enough amps. did you put all the wires on the starter.ground wire also. if turns over then starter good, if not, bad starter/sylenoid or connection. check to see if you are getting fuel , depending if carb just mesh on trottle to see gas poured in, if fuel injected there should be like a valve(like the one on the coolant line where one put freon in, press to see if pressure comes out. check spark to see if it is getting fire. all the above check out then it may well be computer might be bad.
i had the same problem on my 90 half ton, it is more than likley the starter has stuck in the engaged position. There are contacts inside of the solenoid that can in effect weld themselves together. Try giving the starter a tap with a hammer, (don't go crazy but give it a good whack) if you cant reach use a piece of pipe or something to get down to the starter. Hit on the body of the starter,(the big part) not the solenoid. Then hook the battery back up and see what happens. If it starts with the key like normal, change the starter. If it still turns over when you hook the battery up get under the truck (after you disconnect the battery) and disconnect the battery cable (large red wire) from the starter to the battery and tie it away from any metal. Hook the battery back up and get back under and find the small wire on the starter. With the key off use a test light or meter to check for voltage on the small wire. If there is power there with the key off it could be the ignition switch. If there is no power, change the starter. Keep in mind that if the starter is as old as the truck it may break when you try to get the battery cable off of it, but if it does thats another sign that the starter/solenoid is the cause of your problems. If you don't feel comfortable testing anything just take the starter off and take it somewhere, lots of places will test it for free.
sounds like you are hooking up the starter wrong. the positive goes to the starter main terminal from the battery. the ignition wire goes to the s on the solenoid, which activates 12 volts when the ignition switch is turned on which causes a magnetic field
inside the solenoid and joins the connectors
in the solenoid to the main positive wire from the
battery to the main starter unit brushes/armature inside the starter unit. If you have a constant
12 volts from the ignition wire it will keep the solenoid engaged. If you put the main positive wire on the wrong solenoid terminal it will immediately engage the starter. try putting the main battery wire to the correct terminal or perhaps check the ignition wire for a short or constant voltage to the solenoid.
