Question about 1994 Mercury Grand Marquis

1 Answer

Rear driver side window cable

My Mom's Grand Marquis door made a pop sound this morning. I came home from school and took it apart to discover there was a cable laying on the bottom of the inside of the door. it has a ball on the end so it seems like the cable just came loose. I don't know where the cable hooks to?
with the cable in this state, the window does move down, but not up. I moved it up by hand and unplugged the electric controls. So my question is where does the cable attach to, or is there a site with a diagram of the setup? I'm only 18, new to this kinda of automotive work and don't have any fancy tools. So if any one knows a way to jury-rig it, that would help.

I have a 2000 grand marquis, only the two rear, electric windows don't work, is there something in common to cause this problem ?

One place to check would be to remove the trim from the lower part of the B-pillar (the part between the front and back doors, where the rear door hinges are) on the driver side. There should be a plug near the floor connecting the wiring from the main power window switch on the driver's door to the two rear doors.

You will have to remove the door panel

Most likely you have a broken window regulator
& are not going to get it up

If it is a switch problem, only, then you unplug the
motor & put battery voltage direct from the battery,
to get it up, until you have time to work on the problem

Power Window assemblY Needs replacing. I've had to replace my driver side assembly a few times over the years in my 97 accord after a wreck on that side. Something doesn't line up right anymore and it eventually causes it to wear out. Steel cable and plastic parts don't work real well together over time- that plastic can wear out. Tricky part can be getting the door panel off. From there it can be pretty straight forward. May need an extra set of hands to get the window just right to attach to the bracket on the regulator assembly. May find some useful videos online, even if it's for a different car it can give you a good idea.

This sounds most like a worn lock actuator which wouldn't be uncommon. If you need a diagram on how to replace, let me know.

The regulator cables come as an assembly. You need to replace the whole regulator.

How do I remove the inside door panel of a 2001 Mercury Marquis

Pop out the window buttons part of the armrest and disconnect the wires. Do the same with the trunk and fuel door buttons. Pop out the two little plastic/rubber whatever they are pieces out of the door pull strap and remove those screws. There's another screw on the bottom edge of the door and the outer edge by the reflector. Pop the bezel out from around the door handle and there's another screw. Pull out and up on the door panel. If you don't know your door code now would be a good time to write down that 5-digit number on the lock control box. You might not have to pop out the button panel or trunk/fuel buttons if you can get your hands behind the panel and take the harnesses apart but you a bad dude if u can.
