96 buick lesabre was running fine but dies at stops

Took the car on a 60 mile round trip and when it got a block from the house it died then the next day took it 20 blocks and it died at a stoplight. both times had to wait to let it cool down for many hours before it would start back up. could it be water in the gas or a clogged fuel injector. if not what could it be. ive heard of people wasting money on O2 sensors and fuel pumps and other parts with no luck at all. any help would be much appreciated.

Your engine could be getting hot due to a stopped up radiator cores also check coolant level.. and idle speed control is low are not working.

First thing to do is chg. fuel filter and then do a fuel pressure test, i know you said you have heard of people wasting money on fuel pumps, but it is a common problem on G.M. products. Even if it turns out not to be the problem at least you can eliminate that and your only out a few bucks. If it was water in the fuel why did it take 60 mi. to show up, unless you just put gas in it a couple of blocks from your house, and also if it were an injector it would only miss on one cyl. like a fouled plug, and most likely the chk. engine light would come on, and you maid no mention of that.

Voltage regulator

Sounds like a bad connection. The alternator only charges the battery, so if it or the voltage regulator in the alternator fails, the battery would slowly run down, not die all at once.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Check to see that all the little vacuum hoses (and one big one to the brake booster) are attached and not cracked. Hope that works.

Try cleaning the fuel pump filter. Under the seat behind the driver lift the carpet and you will find a round cover with six screws remove the cover. The fuel pump is directly below unscrew the retaining round plate and remove the pump. At the base of the pump is a small filter if it is covered in black muck that's your problem. clean and replace. job takes about 10 mins good luck. please let me know how you got on!
