Is there a service engine light on close to where you read your speedometer? Also evap canisters could be saturated causing gas smell.

Check your air filter is not clogged, or needing changed or cleaned, it may be restricting the flow of air, therefore the EMS over-compensates with too much fuel..giving off stronger fumes

I have 2005 lincoln aviator I st asserted to smell gas only after I drive it then noticed gas leaking from atop of the tank down the side it's a very small amount where would it be coming from?

You will need to remove the gas tank and locate the leak. I leave you with a link to youtube and a video of the gas tank removable on a 05 explorer (same vehicle as the Aviator) to access the fuel pump. While you have it out you should replace the fuel pump if the vehicle has more than 75,000 miles on it..

If intake cover lose could cause car to sputter when on load and cause too much to pass through that you get a smell of fuel at the exhaust

Nothing on the upper and lower intake manifold should be loose. It can cause a gas smell. The PCM is over compensating for a bad vacuum leak. Other things can cause gas smells also. Have it scanned , later down the road it will cost you lots more....

I have a 96 ford explorer it s 5.0 it idles rough and you smell fumes like flooding runs good when driving down the road

On the intake is an IAC motor( is luminous block with a solinoid
attached to it, also with a two wire connector plugged into it. Remove this from the vehicle and clean it with electronic spray or carberator spray, then reinstall it.

Runs rough and then smells of gas

Im having a similar problem with my 97 Exlporer, after testing the fuel regulator which was o,k. the holding pressure test failed with fuel found to be leaking into the cylinders and the strong odor of fuel coming out of the exhaust pipe as well as hard starting , and rough idle. I have decided to take the injectors out this weekend for testing. Oh and you will love this, When i took this vehicle to my mechanic, he replaced the head gasket and sent me down the road, i could tell something was wrong after few miles of driving and the nasty smell of gas. He just lost my business, guess i'll just tackle it myself......................

Gas smell

There has to be a leak in the fuel system. Has it been checked while running? There will be at least 2 lines. One will be pressure and the other is a return.
