Question about 1999 Ford Expedition

1 Answer

99 5.4 Expedition issues

I have a 99 Expi. with 139k on it with the 5.4. It's been bucking and stalling on my wife. I ran the codes and they read:
P0401
P1299
P0300
P0443
P1451
P1309
I took it to the dealership last year for similar issues and they stated it could be the #4 coil back feeding into the PCM or a bad computer. I took it home and replace all of the coils with Accel super coils, and have since replaced the coils on three different cylinders.
The temp gauge reads fine. I need to fix this because it stalled in an intersection today with my kids in the truck with her.

P0401 - EGR Flow Insufficient Detected The EGR system is monitored during steady state driving conditions while the EGR is commanded on. The test fails when the signal from the DPF EGR sensor indicates that EGR flow is less than the desired minimum.

  • Vacuum supply
  • EGR valve stuck closed
  • EGR valve leaks vacuum
  • EGR flow path restricted
  • EGRVR circuit shorted to PWR
  • VREF open to DPF EGR sensor
  • DPF EGR sensor downstream hose off or plugged
  • EGRVR circuit open to PCM
  • VPWR open to EGRVR solenoid
  • DPF EGR sensor hoses both off
  • DPF EGR sensor hoses reversed
  • Damaged EGR orifice tube
  • Damaged EGRVR solenoid
  • Damaged PCM

P1299 - Cylinder Head Over Temperature Protection Active Indicates an engine overheat condition was detected by the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor. An FMEM Strategy called Fail-safe Cooling was activated to cool the engine.
  • Engine cooling system concerns
  • Low engine coolant level
  • Base engine concerns

P0300 - Random Misfire The random misfire DTC indicates multiple cylinders are misfiring or the PCM cannot identify which cylinder is misfiring.
  • Camshaft position sensor (CMP)
  • Low fuel: less than 1/8 tank
  • Stuck open EGR valve

P0443 - EVAP Control System Canister Purge Valve Circuit Malfunction The PCM monitors the EVAP canister purge valve circuit for an electrical failure. The test fails when the signal moves outside the minimum or maximum allowable calibrated parameters for a specified purge duty cycle by PCM command.
  • VPWR circuit open
  • EVAP canister purge valve circuit shorted to GND
  • Damaged EVAP canister purge valve
  • EVAP canister purge valve circuit open
  • EVAP canister purge valve circuit shorted to VPWR
  • Damaged PCM

P1451 - EVAP Control System Canister Vent Solenoid Circuit Malfunction Monitors the canister vent (CV) solenoid circuit for an electrical failure. The test fails when the signal moves outside the minimum or maximum allowable calibrated parameters for a specified canister vent duty cycle by PCM command.
  • VPWR circuit open
  • CV solenoid circuit shorted to PWR GND or CHASSIS GND
  • Damaged CV solenoid
  • CV solenoid circuit open
  • CV solenoid circuit shorted to VPWR
  • Damaged PCM

P1309 - Misfire Monitor Disabled When the misfire monitor is disabled, usually due to the input signal generated by the camshaft position (CMP) sensor, by sensing the passage of teeth from the CMP wheel.
  • Camshaft position sensor
  • Powertrain control module
  • ECT, MAF, and CKP sensors

with the codes you have here I would look in the direction of the egr valve first because that will cause the bucking and stalling, and the misfires, but so will the canister vent solonoid. the misfire codes and the cylinder overtemp code could be from overheating or because if the misfires.

Should the pcm on a 99 jeep grand cherokee laredo be changed if a while back the wires were crossed during a battery jump and now the obd is able to give a reading and it stalls out

what are the fault codes reading first
If you feel that the ECM has a problem in itself and not reacting to a faulty sensor get a known good ECM and swap it out as a test

My lexus ls400 suddenly started bucking and acting sluggishly to the gas pedal. Now it stalls on take off at a stop light. Also the shifting seems off yet the car runs through the first three gears well...

you need to hook up with a scan tool that will read body and transmission codes. sounds like a solinoid control issue inside the transmission.

Fule pump and filter have been changed teres are good and spark plugs are good to why does it buck and sometimes shut off

I had the same issue on my 03 Expedition. Jerks randomly but gets worst and extreme misfires/stalls/shuts down. Then restart and its fine. These bucks more likely are random misfires (Chk engine light may/not come on) associated with the ignition coil/s failing. These coils have a average life expectancy of 79,000 miles or 5yrs. I replaced all 8 COPs (coil over plug) @ 48,000 miles just to be safe with new accel coils. The coil models for engines 4.6/5.4 V8s are DG508. Hopefully this helps!

99 Ford Expedition, turns over but won't start..

My 02 Explorer had a similar problem and it was the Idle Air Control value. Had it replaced and it started and ran fine. Not had to replace if you that's the problem. I had it towed and then the mechanic read the codes and replaced the IAC.

1999 Buck Regal Stalls While Driving

Possible solution to stalling '99 Buick. My '99 Buick Century would die for no apparant reason with no error codes. After 4 days at a Buick dealership and many frustrated mechanics, the problem was corrosion from under the battery location. The wiring harness had small amounts of corrosion internally. Check the wiring under the battery for any corrosion. This has been the problem on more than 1 vehicle that we are aware of. No service bulletin has been issued by Buick.

99 grand am stalls and bucks after long drives

it has to be the fuel filter, alot of times they will get some gunk in them, but not enough to effect it until there has been alot of fuel ran through it, it will make sense once you think aobut it, when the car is driven for a while the feul slowly pulls the gunk through the lines tword the engine, and peices break off little by little.

This is more common of a problem than some people think.

YOU MORE THAN LIKELY HAVE IT FIXED BY NOW BUT IT'S YOUR SPEED SENSOR. SAME THING HAPPENED TO MY 99 5 SPEED. ONCE IT WAS REPLACED IT RAN LIKE A CHAMP.
