1993 TOYOTA LANDCRUISER Transmission fluid all over, belt to powersteering pump was snapped.. Won't work in reverse. Put it in D and was able to drive 1/2 mile home high rpm low power. Anyone know what this might be? I am going to go outside and pull the splash pan/guard and see if i can see anything

You are right! It was transmission fluid. What happened apparently the belt snapped, slicing through the tranny coolant line from radiator. Thats where all the fluid came from. no power steering problem. I have replaced the line and put a belt on but it is too small even after i adjust the pulley. So i think i will replace that . Than i will fire her up and pray that i didn't blow the tranny!!!

I would think that the power steering and the tranny are two different systems, unless on a land cruiser they are some how connected. If the tranny is low on fluid, then yes it will affect the tranny ( i.e. not shifting, not going into gear, etc). Have you checked the fluid level of the tranny. That would be the first thing to check out. Also, the belt that goes to the power steering pump - does the belt operate anything else on the engine. I would check that out also.

( I'm posting my comments to you again, since I responded under "clarification", but I really like those thumbs up's, so if my solution was helpful- Please rate! And I'm real glad you figured out the problem. Just to play it safe, you may want to add an ADDITIVE to the tranny, such as LUCAS, to help the tranny out a bit since it ran low on fluid. Good Luck!

Sounds like lack of oil in the auto trans. power steer pump should have no bearing on auto transmission. good luck

Why is it hard to turn the steering wheel?

Check the level of your power steering fluid and have your pump checked. You are probably just low o fluid.

Ford 1993 Taurus steering

Have you checked the power steering fluid level? The reservoir for the fluid will be at the front of the engine, where the belt runs the power steering pump. If it's low or out add a little power steering fluid till full, then start car and slowly turn wheels back and forth from stop to stop-not too ******* the stops (when the steering won't turn further that way...that's what I mean by stops)....Turn wheel one way full travel, then reverse and turn the other way. Check the fluid level again, and add as needed.
If fluid is not low, the belt may be too loose to make the power steering pump work, or you may have a bigger problem that needs professional attewntion.

What oil do you put into a rear diff for a 1993 toyota landcruiser

  • Changing the fluid on this is fairly easy.
  1. Pull the fill plug.
  2. Use a manual pump to evacuate the old fluid.
  3. Fill the rear pumpkin until the 75W - 90 synthetic gear lube just barely seeps out the fill hole.
  4. Wipe any metal shavings off the fill plug.
  5. Insert the fill plug in the hole and snug it up, not to tight, just nice and snug.

  • Hope this helps.

Powersteering and transmission fluid How to check

the power steering has a resavour near the fender with a lid on it remove the lid and it has a dip stick on it as long as it's on the stick it's OK. The transmission uses Mercon dextron III and it's important to check with the engine running and to not over fill it. From the low part to the high it's only half a quart so when adding put in in a litttle at a time and check it each time and if it doesn't look right chack it several times as the oil can be on the sides of the dip tube. and too low is bad too. If in doubt. have this work done by a trained perfessional as being wrong can be very expensive.

How do I tighten the belts on my 1991 toyota landcruiser to keep from making any slipping noise? Belt only slips when I'm turning sharp in either direction.

this sounds like the powersteering unit busy saying cheers. check your powersteering fluid is topped up. keeping it topped up would keep this from slipping. the belt is tighten to the right degree. I'm sure it's just the fluid. otherwise an early sign that the powersteering system is packing up. good luck

Where is the power steering fluid unit found?

It is actually on the passengers side near the engine wall the pump and reservoir are made as one You will need a flash light follow the drive belt down past the alternator to the powersteering pump look for a black lid with a yellow steering wheel on top. The whole steering system takes only 3/4 quart of dextron automatic transmission fluid so do not over fill.
