Question about 1996 Pontiac Sunfire

Low gas pressure in 96 sunfire. Replaced the oxygen sensor, vacuum hose, fuel pump and fuel filter. Fixed the ignition regulator. When I shut off the car it sometimes fires right up right away. It used to fire up right away when shut off for less than 10 minutes. This happens even when it is cold out.

You have mentioned that you replaced the O2 sensor. The oxygen sensor is completely ignored by the engine computer while the car is starting, and doesn't come into play at all until the engine warms up completely. Are you sure you have a fuel pressure problem? If so, replacing the O2 sensor would not have any affect.

To be sure you have a fuel pressure problem, you need to measure it. This car does not have a fuel pressure test port, so you need an inline fuel pressure test gauge. To test the pressure, connect an in-line gauge and switch your ignition switch to the "run" position. (Do not start the engine.) The fuel pump should run for two seconds. During this time when the engine is not running, you should have between 41 and 47 PSI of fuel pressure. If you start the engine, the fuel pressure should drop somewhat at idle (maybe somewhere closer to 28-35 PSI). Fuel pressure is regulated according to intake manifold vacuum, so at idle, it should be fairly low, while at higher throttle settings, it should be higher.

From what I gather, your car cranks for a long time before starting. If you suspect low fuel pressure, a defective fuel pump relay could cause that condition. The relay is located in a relay/fuse box under the hood on the driver's side of the car. If the relay fails, the fuel pump can still be energized by the engine oil pressure switch. This switch closes when engine oil pressure reaches ~4PSI. If your engine is not producing 4PSI of oil pressure while cranking, or if it takes a while to reach 4PSI, that would explain your problem.

You should have a test port on the Fuel Supply rail, use a tool from a local auto parts "Tool Loaner program" where you can borrow tools for free,w/a deposit of course,then follow the steps provided;

MPI Fuel System Pressure Test

The MPI fuel system used in vehicles equipped with a 4.OL engine employs a vacuum balanced pressure regulator. Fuel pressure should be approximately 55-69 kPa (8-10 psi) lower with the vacuum line attached to the regulator than with the vacuum line disconnected. System fuel should be 214 kPa (31 psi) with the vacuum line connected to the regulator and 269 kPa (39 psi) with the vacuum line disconnected. CAUTION: Some fuel may be discharged when connecting fuel gauge to fuel rail.
  1. Connect a 0-414 kPa (0-60 psi) fuel pressure gauge to test port pressure fitting on fuel rail (Fig. 7).
  2. Remove vacuum line from pressure regulator.
  3. Start the vehicle.
  4. Note gauge reading. With vacuum line disconnected, fuel pressure should be approximately 269 kPa (39 psi).
  5. Connect vacuum line to pressure regulator. Note gauge reading. Fuel pressure should be approximately 214 kPa (31 psi).
  6. If fuel pressure is not approximately 55-69 kPa (8-10 psi) higher with vacuum line removed from regulator, inspect pressure regulator vacuum line for leaks, kinks or blockage. CAUTION: Fuel pressure will rise to as much as 655 kPa (95 psi) when the fuel return tine is pinched shut, shut engine down immediately after pinching oft fuel return line.
  7. If fuel pressure is low, momentarily pinch shut the hose section of the fuel return line. If fuel pressure remains low, inspect the fuel supply line, fuel filter, and fuel rail inlet for blockage. If fuel pressure rises replace fuel pressure regulator.
  8. If fuel pressure is above specifications, inspect the fuel return line for kinks and blockage.

Capacity Test

  1. Remove the cap from the pressure test port in the fuel rail.
  2. Connect a 0-414 kPa (0-60 psi) fuel pressure gauge to the pressure fitting on the fuel rail (Fig. 7).
  3. Start the vehicle. Pressure should be approxi- mately 214 kPa (31 psi) with the vacuum hose connected to the pressure regulator and 269 kPa (39 psi) with the vacuum hose removed from the pressure regulator.
  4. If the pressure is not to specification, check the following before replacing the fuel pressure regulator:
  • 4a - Inspect the fuel supply and return lines/hoses for kinks or restricting bends
  • 4b - Check the fuel pump flow rate. A good fuel pump will deliver at least 1 liter of fuel per minute with the fuel return line pinched off. If the fuel pump does not pump adequately, then inspect the fuel system for a plugged fuel filter or fuel pump inlet filter (sock). Fuel pump flow rate can be done by connecting one end of an old A/C gauge hose to the fuel test port on the fuel rail and inserting the other end of the hose into a container of at least 1 liter capacity. Run the fuel pump by installing a jumper wire into diagnostic connector terminals D1-5 and D1-6. Be sure to pinch off the fuel return line or most of the fuel will be returned to the fuel tank.

P1131--Lack of HO2S-11 Switch,Sensor Indicates Lean

Front O2 Sensor -- at converter inlet,pass side (Bank #1)

Could be ten things

Check that you have no vacuum leaks anywhere,including
the exhaust manifold & system

Check air filter cover & ducting for leaks

I doubt you have experience or test equip to test
the O2 Sensors, so replace both front ones, if you
have dual exhaust

Overreving with no power and excessive gas consumption air filter cleaned map sensor replaced fuel pump and filter


usually caused by busted diaphram in fuel pressure regulator allowing fuel to be drawn thru regulator directly to intake manifold. Pull vacuum line off regulator, plug line with golf tee, start car and watch to see if gas comes out of regulator. If yes, turn off car, replace regulator. The regulator sits near the fuel rail on the top of the engine as shown below. I will paste replacement instructions below from autozone.com in case you need to replace the regulator. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Removal & Installation

4.2L Engine

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet resonator.
  3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the retaining clips at the front of the engine.
  4. Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  5. Clean any dirt from the fuel pressure regulator and the surrounding area.
  6. Disconnect the fuel return pipe.
  7. Remove the fuel return pipe retainer.
  8. Remove the fuel pressure regulator retainer.
  9. Remove the fuel pressure regulator.
  10. Inspect the regulator filter screen for contamination. If contaminated, replace the fuel pressure regulator.

To install:
  1. Install the regulator filter.
  2. Install the new O-ring on the fuel pressure regulator.
  3. Lubricate the fuel pressure regulator O-ring with clean engine oil.
  4. Push the fuel pressure regulator into the regulator housing on the fuel rail.
  5. Install the fuel pressure regulator retainer. Tighten the regulator retainer screw to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6. Install the fuel return pipe retainer. Tighten the return pipe retainer screw to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  7. Connect the fuel return pipe.
  8. Connect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10. Inspect for leaks:
    1. Turn ON the ignition for 2 seconds.
    2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
    3. Turn ON the ignition.
    4. Inspect for fuel leaks.

  11. Install the engine wiring harness into the retaining clips at the front of the engine.
  12. Install the air intake resonator.

Starting car is problem. it will start after maybe two trys. i have tried engine cleaner, but still it is slow starting,. battery is good, thats been checked.


When you have an engine that is hard to start or the engine takes longer than normal to start, with a fuel injected engine it will normally be caused by a fuel problem. Another problem would be slow cranking of the engine because of a low battery, I would check all of the fuel related problems if the engine seems to crank normally. There are a few things to check. First pull the fuel filter off and wipe it off so you don't get gas in your mouth and try to blow through one of the fuel connections on the filter. If you can't blow through it the filter is pluged and needs to be replaced. A plugged fuel filter can cause hard starting and can also damage your fuel pump. The next thing to do when everything is put back on the car is to check the fuel system for bleed down. You need to locate the fuel pressure test connection on the engine. Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the connection and start the engine, then turn the ignition off. With the engine off the pressure should read and stay between 30psi and 40psi, to be sure of the pressure you will have get the spec's on the engine you have. The main thing you will be looking for is to make sure the pressure doesn't start bleeding down in to direction of zero after a few minutes or maybe even immediately. If you see the pressure start to bleed down you have a problem. There are two problems that normally cause the pressure to bleed down. One is a bad check valve in the fuel pump, the other is a bad fuel pressure regulator. The main thing that happens with a fuel pressure regulator is the diaphram inside starts leaking. When that happens sometimes it will leak fuel into the intake manifold through the vaccuum hose connection to the intake manifold. To check for a fuel leak through the vacuum hose connection, locate the vacuum hose on the fuel pressure regulator and pull the hose from either the manifold connection or from the connection at the fuel reguator. If you see any gas at all the fuel regulator is leaking and must be replaced. If it is a slow leak from the regulator you might have to start the engine with the vacuum hose disconnected and look for a leak from the hose. If you don't find anything wrong with the regulator the next problem area would be fuel pressure bleeding back into the gas tank because of a bad check valve in the fuel pump. If this is the problem the fuel pump would have to be replaced. My first guess as to what is causing your problem would be the fuel pressure regualtor although I would definately want to make sure the fuel filter is not plugged. (Please Note) The fuel pressure regulator is located in the intake manifold area of the engine. The fuel pump is located in the gas tank. The fuel filter is located usually somewhere under the car.

sound like intake leak. get a scanner to see if egr valve not staying open . check map sensor + make sure the vacuum line didnt come off it . check coolant sensor. oxygen sensor .check fuel pressure regulator. check vacuum line that goes to fuel pressur e regulator . make sure there is no gas in it. make sure its getting vacuum. check pvc valve.shake it make sure it rattle .

your problem appears to be the idle control motor located on the air intake manifold it is a small motor that goes bad quite often. Other items that can cause this is a bad /clogged air filter or a tune up (spark plugs and wires), or clogged fuel injectors. to clean the injectors you can buy a container of fuel system cleaner and pour it into the gas tank and as you drive it cleans the system.

Once the fuel system is cleaned via a tankful of cleaner & gas then the idle controller motor would be next on the list to be replaced.
