Question about 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix

3 Answers

97 Pontiac GTP will not always start, turn iginition key and nothing... moved shifter from park to nuetral and sometimes starts. Did not think it's starter since it cranks up immediately when it does start. Could it be something other than starter?

Hi... finally got a replacement part and after replacing Neutral saftey switch on trans I still have same problem, turn key and no start.... I held key in starting position and moved floor shifter and got car to start in neutral and then park repeatedly but after trying to start in position other than park or Neutral it t's dead again and will not start. parts store told me there are two Neutral started switches; one in steering column and the one on trans.... and thoughts on this? Could it be the ignition switch?

Yes,..

From the sounds of it check whats called your vehicles drive gear linkage. It's what tells the car it's in gears of neutral, drive, reverse etc,..

When the linkage isn't set proper the ignition sequence doesn't know if the car is really in park, neutral, drive or reverse and won't start it via that minor adjustment.

Check neutral safety switch under the trans linkage arm (on trans)

No need to get underneath...Switch is located on top of trans under the hood. You need to find the power wire, hot with key in start, then using a test light, find which wires are for the backup lights, start in park and start in neutral. In park the wire should be hot when key is turned different wire for neutral and reverse lights when each are selected Switch can be moved to adjust and if adjusting fails likely it is worn out. If switch is working then power will be present at the small trigger terminal on the starter next to the main battery connection on the solenoid when the key has been turned to start.

Neutral switch is adjustable. best way to adjust is to put car in reverse then have someone watch reverse lights while you move the switch till they come on. Then you can "fine" adjust to get it right in park and neutral if necessary. Yes, there is a switch on top of column but I don't think that's your problem, based on what you wrote.

This sounds like you need a new fuel pump. when you go to start it and it cranks over that means that the battery and starter are all working but the fuel pump is getting close to being dead and you should replace this asap because you don't want to be driving down the highway and have that thing go out on you because then you have to pay for it to get towed away and its just a hassle so just replace it especially if it never has been replaced its really going to die soon

Shifter is locked

put your foot on the brake and hold it there when you turn the key and move the shifter this could be a safety not allowing you to move the shifter.

When i start my 2002 grandprix gtp shifter is locked have to turn off ignition use ignition key in consol put in nutural then start it then i can put it in drive and go would this be a fuse by any chance.

if you pull around the area were the key goes in by the stick and you can get the plastic out of your way you will notice the key just pushes the nuetral safety switch in thus allowing you to put it in nuetral. your pushing the brake should do the same thing if not cut the wires on the switch one by one it will be permantly disengaged. but just drive it as normal youll never know the difference.

What would be the reason for the key not to come out of the ignition and the car not shift from park without pushing a button one the bottom of the shifter on a 97 grand prix

There may be a brake pedal switch sensor that determines when you have the brake applied. Normally if the pedal is down the pedal switch activates and removes a "lock" that would keep the shifter from moving.

Ordinarily when this happens you have to physically move the lock or replace or adjust the brake pedal switch to get the shifter to move freely.

If the car is not in "PARK" properly (the transmission can be in another gear even if the shifter "seems" to be in park - this would require an adjustment in the shift linkage) then the key won't turn to start.
Likewise until it is "properly" in park or neutral you may have difficulty locking the steering column and removing the key.

Cant get my gear shift out of park on my 2003 aztek

turn the key on 1 position from off and attempt to move the shifter if you can move the shifter you have a faulty park lock solenoid (even if u can move the shifter it still more than likely is the park lock solenoid) have it replaced this is a nuisance yes but does not in any way affect the safety and operation of the vehicle

to use it with the faulty part turn key on 1 position move shifter to neutral and start car then move shifter to desired position

2005 pontiac key won't start car

If you have a center console shifter make absolutely positve the gear select is all the way up into PARK, even the slightest thing in the way can cause the key to lock you from starting vehicle, if a coin or other object fell down into the slot of the shifter it could effect it. If you try to start in Nuetral place foot on the brake first, shift into Nuetral and try to start. The start/Nuetral safety switch could be bad as well, but hopefully it is something as simple as a penny in the way. wiggle shift lever all the way into park. I had a guest the other day who could not get her key out of the car, and she had a coke from wendys in the cup holder, the shift lever would not go all the way home by quarter of an inch, as soon as I moved the cup forward the shift lever fell into place on its own and the key came right out.

1996 grand am wont start

the battery is dead, it's as simple as that. the battery only needs a tiny bit of power to turn on the interior lights and panel lights, but it does not have enough to dis-engage park lock out electric solenoid.
