The distributor drive gear probably is striped out. not too bad if it is that. The only other thing it can be is the cam is broken or striped. Much more likely the distributor gear. You can remove it and get a new dist. or a used one. bring the number one cylinder up to top dead center and line up the rotor with the distributor cap #1.

Your idle speed should be some where between 900 and 1200 rpm
Set you idle speed by adjusting the screw on your carb
