Usually the O2 sensor is contaminated and has a weak switching rate or is completely dead. If stuck low/lean it will cause a rich demand, if stuck high/rich it will cause a lean demand.

Engine misfires. Battery dead/fixed. Po303 code: Changed plugs/wires, code cleared/reappeared. Misfiring again. Po420 code/then cleared. Po306 code. Replaced coil tower. Misfired again..

You either have a bad catalytic converter causing too much back pressure or you are running rich. I think cylinder 3 and 6 are on the same side of the engine (except opposite banks) right? Locate the fuel pressure regulator. Is it on the same side? I've seen those go bad and allow fuel to be sucked into the vacuum line causing a rich condition/ misfire on two or three cylinders on that side of the engine.

Can a check engine light with and error code of EGR cause black soot in the tailpipe of a 2005 dodge grand caravan???

Hi. The black soot is that your engine is running too rich. I would have checked out the O2 sensor. The O2 sensor tells the computer how much gas is needed to run your car. If the sensor is malfunctioning or dead the computer will make the engine run with more gas (rich) Go to your mechanic and have him run the code scanner. I would also clean out the EGR valve which you can do yourself. Good luck

How can you bench test an 0xygen sensor?

you cant, you can pretend to.
but only million dollar lab can test it.
what you can do is see if its dead or alive on a bench.
never if its ACCURATE.
4 wires O2.
check the heater for spec resistance, (see makers web site, its there)
it s like 10 ohms
next attach and accurate volt meter to the 2 CELL: pins.
the 02 side is 500C battery. it works only hot.
then play a live propane torch over the tip then well fully hot
the CELL wakes up. see?
then you can remove the torch and see the AIR hit the tip
and the voltage drop. to zero.
zero means lean , max 02.
1v rich
0v lean.
the flame hitting it block 02, and forces rich. 1v.
play the flame back and forth see it switch, this is a sure sign
of a NON dead sensor.
but is all just a waste of time. IMO.

Error Code P0172

THE 02 sensors is stuck lean. at 0v. the ECU
goes max rich in this case. (compensates) 173 means ECU slammed rich due to 02 reading gross lean.
lots of causes.:
1: a bad 02 , say stuck at 0volts. ( over 100k miles they can to that)
2: exhaust leaks{cracks} near 02. and stuck at 0volts
3: dead or weak, or dirty MAF, causing illegal unmetered air. lean.
4: intake air system has gross air leak.

2004 2.0 lt. running very rich

on CO cars, it's below the ECU/PCM
but if you have lambda's, then its not a CO car.
CO cars are missing 02 sensors.
and you said, Sensors, as Plural. got 2?
you failed to post where car is and where it was sold new.
Engine controls vary by country.
this car may be OEBD type ECU/PCM , "use a scan tool"
and if motor is rich , that can be for 2 reasons.
ENGine is rich
Catalysis dead, or both.
and CO is not HC.
but high CO usually does, give you high CO.

Camry runs rich

check under your passenger seat for a code on your computer that may tell you a code? Call the dealer with the code and ask what is wrong or look for the answer for the code on the Internet.

1997 gmc k1500 runs really rich

Hi there, first of all you must synch the cam/crank sensors. To do this put the engine on top dead center remove the distributor cap and look very closely at the dist housing there will be a 6 mark and an 8 mark loosen distributor and rotate untill the rotor points directly at the 8. The marks are small so get a light and look closely.Clear codes and restart. Is vehicle still running rich?

I took my truck to emissions and the carbon minoxide is at 125 and the limit is 25. What would cause such a deadly emission so high over the limit?

excessive carbon monoxide is usually the result of very rich mixtures. Here are some causes for rich mixtures:
1. leaking fuel injector(s)
2. excessive fuel pressure at the injectors.
3. ruptured fuel pressure regulator diaphragm
4. crankcase fuel contamination (from leaking injectors)
5. plugged PCV valve or hose
6. closed loop control system incorrectly shifted rich (bad O2 sensor)
7. false input signal to ECM due to bad sensor(s).
