Use a air impact driver to run the tool in.. do it fast and hard...( do not run it in all the way...leave a gap to "pop-it" in...

How does the clutch on a 1962 sunbeam work

All the following from memory of my 1962 Rapier Series IIIa that I sold over thirty years ago so need checking.

It's hydraulically operated (Lockheed if I remember correctly).

The push rod from the slave cylinder operated the clutch release bearing (USA: throw out bearing) via al pivoting lever. The bearing is a graphite block held in a cast iron carrier, not a ball bearing unit as found on modern clutches.

The clutch itself consists of the flywheel and clutch cover, both bolted together and driven by the engine. The clutch cover uses six strong coil springs (not the more modern diaphragm spring) to clamp the driven plate to the flywheel. The driven plate is lined with friction surfaces like brake friction parts and it transfers the drive from the engine to the gearbox via a splined shaft.

When the clutch pedal is depressed, the release bearing presses on part of the sprung clutch cover and via some short levers, unclamps the driven plate. The engine can now turn freely without moving the rest of the drive train.

How to change a/c clutch bearing

This car has 2 different compressors 1 is SANDEN and other is CV171 but both require a specail puller to remove the outer clutch hub This puller screws on to the main shaft and has a threaded nut (outer side ) that screws into hub this removes hub then remove snap ring off compressor snout and install a spacer (specail tool) this covers the main shaft not to damage thrust bearing internal of compressor and a second puller can remove pulley. Most bearings are swedge fitted so the whole pulley needs to be replaced this comes in kit with a clutch coil also it is held on with a snap ring also. there are small washers (shims) that adjust the air gap on the pulley to hub set @ .025-.045

How do u get the pully off the a/c compressor ? I have the bolt and the lock ring off . Do I need a puller ? is it pressed on?

most all A/C clutch assemblies are pressed on and require an A/C clutch remover. Yours in one of the ones that requires this tool for removal.

How to remove the a/c clutch from a 1998 gmc sierra 1500 5.7 l

I believe this AC compressor is the same as my '95 Astro. The clutch is pressed on to the compressor shaft. You should see a threaded hole in the center of the clutch and a threaded screw in the center of that hole. To get this off you have to have the proper puller. It threads into the clutch and has a screw that you tighten against the end of the screw in the clutch. This pulls the clutch off the compressor (maybe, if it isn't frozen to the shaft). FYI, I just replaced my AC compressor and found that a new compressor with a new clutch was only about $40 more than the clutch alone. The puller cost $30.) Of course, if you replace the compressor you have the work of some parts in the AC system and recharging it. There are some good web sites with good pictures and instructions you may want to look into before you decide. I found that when I replaced the compressor, I had to replace the accumulator and compressor oil and there is some question about flushing the AC system when you install a new compressor. Are you certain that it's the clutch assembly?
Check the idler pulley. Poor tension in the idler pulley spring will cause the belt to squeal AT THE ALTERNATOR, and it may sound like it's coming from the AC.
The AC pulley typically "freewheels" when the AC is not on and the engine is running.
Have someone turn the AC on and off while the engine is running and watch the operation of the AC clutch. If it's working properly, the clutch should "click" and the back part of the pulley should start turning or try to turn.
If the squealing noise continues when the clutch is freewheeling, it's probably the idler pulley. If the AC Pulley won't start freewheeling, it's probably the clutch.
To remove the clutch system,
  • disengage the idler pulley and remove the serpentine belt from one of the pulleys.
  • rent, purchase or borrow a puller from a local auto parts retailer (Auto Zone and O'Reilly auto parts are both helpful)
  • some of the clutch systems have retaining bolts, some are just pressed in, figure out what you have before removing the clutch assembly using the puller.
  • The puller is also designed to help put the NEW clutch assembly back on the shaft.
The idler pulley assembly is a lot easier to replace.

I take it you have tried a new belt. The Air-conditioner belt driven clutch and bearing repair will cost you nearly as much as a re-conditoned unit. The time, effort and agony is just not worth the trouble of going through any clutch / bearing replacement attempt. (been there done that! And had the right tools!) Ended up replacing the compressor anyway as the internal rollers of the Compressor were the actual problem.

you need a special puller to do so,. and make shure to clean the compressor shaft treads of rust and debrit before using the puller cause it may damage the puller and/or the compressor shaft.

Almost all a/c compressors for the last 20 years require a puller/installer. Look at the hub where the retaining nut on the compressor shaft is... look for threads inside this hub. If they are there you will most certainly need the tools. Remove the retaining nut from the shaft, screw the puller into the hub's internal threads, tighter the center bolt on the puller to push against the compressor shaft. This pushes the clutch off. To install, screw the center section (bolt) of the installer over the threaded shaft, turn the outer portion to push the clutch back onto unit. This will all become clear once you see the tools. Make certain you obtain the correct tooling as there are different pullers/installers for various compressors.

Replacing AC clutch

You can usually change the AC clutch with the compressor still on the vehicle. It takes a specilized ac clutch removal tool to take the old clutch assembly off. By the time you buy a puller set you can have it changed cheaper at a shop. Unless you can rent a puller somewhere such as some auto parts houses rent tools. It really is not a job for a novice mechanic.

A/C clutch pulley rattles

You might need to go and rent/buy a pulley puller from somewhere and then just remove the bolts and apply light pressure with the puller. make sure you take the belt off first.
