Hi, you have either a bad cooling fan motor, or a bad relay for the cooling fan motor.

When it begins to heat up, look and see if the fan is running. You can go to a parts store and buy the relay, they will show you where to put it in. If that doesn't fix it, then you need to have the fan motor tested. It could also be a circuoit in the computer gone bad. This happens quite frequently.

The reason it heats while at idle but not while moving is, when you are moving, air flows through the radiator. When stopped, the fan has to push the air. If you have AC, all fans should run when the AC is on.

How do i stop my car from overheating?


it can be several reasons for your overheating we`ll start with the basics as you don`t say what you have tried yet.it could be the thermostat stuck shut which will require replacement,it could be that your cooling system is low very low on coolant and that there is a leak in the system,either the radiator,water pump, frost plug,or a head gasket is bad and causing the overheating,the cooling system will need to pressure tested and checked for leaks and damaged components replaced and the thermostat should be changed at the same time,it can also be a bad temperature sensor, also the cooling fan or fans may not be working either by a bad connection or a bad cooling fan motor,this can be checked by hooking up a tool that communicates with the on board computer and the cooling fans can be commanded to operate,if they don`t then while they are commanded you can tap on the cooling fans to see if they will start to work or if they are seized or you can hook up two jumper wires one ground and one positive and directly feed the motor from the battery to see if it will start working.and you thought fixing cars were easy,lol

sorry I looked on alldata for you but there is nothing under locations but there is a tecnical service bullitan on it and the fan moduale has been updated if you bought that one aftermarket it might have the same problem I would check with the dealer before installation

well i think you are talking about the blower motor fan for your heating and cooling system inside the van correct???
if so there is a fan resistor that controls the ground circut of the fan allowing it to go high med low... now as far as replacing it it should be under the dash on the right side/ pass. side...
it will be a plug that has about 4-5 wires right next to the blower motor housing and it should be held in by a few screws...slid it out and go replace it this should fix the problem. its the cheapest fix if that is not it then its the control modual on the temp control unit: where your control nobs are...

THERE IS A PROGRAM UPDATE FOR THIS PROBLEM. IT WILL COST YOU AN HOUR LABOR CHARGE BUT IT SHOULD WORK.

1989 cadillac seville!!! cooling fan fault ???


I have one of these cars that had that problem. I fixed mine with a new fan control module. The fan wires can be hooked up backwards to the module when you replace it too. I have a service manual on this car and can answer most questions as I have helped a lot of people with this year model. I will look at which fan should be pluged into where later. You should never straight wire a cooling fan as this will result in other problems because the engine will not come up to normal temperature resulting in poor fuel mileage. This could result in a exhaust converter and o2 sensor failure due to a rich fuel mixture. Reply and I will get back to you asap.

Overheating - Cooling Fans Inoperative - Replace Module Prior To Retailing - Service Action S932
This Service Action Applies to Vehicles That Have Not Been Retailed
Issue:
The cooling fan module on X-TYPE vehicles may fail under certain circumstances. There are various root causes but the design and quality of the printed circuit board within the cooling fan module are the most significant. The NAND gate used in the circuit is detective causing multiple failure modes, this can result in high engine temperature and overheating due to the cooling fans not operating.
A change has been implemented in production from VIN C91720. On these vehicles a 'Philips' printed circuit board has been used that has a modified voltage spike protection strategy.
Action:
To prevent customers from experiencing this issue, install the latest specification cooling fan module on 2002-03 MY X-TYPE vehicles within the above VIN range that have not been retailed.
PROCEDURE
1. Install new cooling fan module (see Workshop Manual, JTIS CD ROM, section: 303-03, SRO 26.25.38).
Parts Information
Warranty Information:
Warranty claims should be submitted quoting S932 in place of the warranty fault code together with SRO: 26.25.38 and the relevant part number. This will result in a labor time allowance of 0.8 hours to replace the cooling fan module and payment for the part used. Should the vehicle be brought back into the workshop for this action alone to be undertaken, an additional labor time allowance of 0.1 hours can be claimed quoting SRO: 10.10.10 for drive in/drive out.
Warranty claims should be submitted quoting the information found in the table. This will result in payment of the stated time and, where applicable, parts/miscellaneous expense codes.
The options that allow for drive in/drive out may only be claimed when the vehicle has been brought in to the workshop for this action alone to be undertaken.
The SROs and parts items listed above have been included for information only, there will be no requirement to enter the parts or SROs onto the claim.
NOTE: Always perform a DDW claim search first to determine whether this service action has been performed on this vehicle. The warranty selection under the vehicle inquiry will give a listing of all claims against the vehicle. If this service action number appears in the program code field, do not perform this service action.
