Once you get to "know" your car, you have an idea of the vehicle's oil consumption. Another consideration is if you have done average , or hard driving too. If the car has been thru several oil changes, and not used any oil, then it isn't that important to regularly check the dipstick .
If you just bought a car, and are not sure, then check the oil every time your fill the gas tank.

If it is a cummins engine use Shell Rotella oil 15/40. This is what cummins recommends. Use the same if a mercedes engine. Black oil in a diesel is normal so don't worry.
