Starter will not turn

Could be anything from a bad starter to a bad alternator

Dec 28, 2014 | Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

Alternator

Instructions1 Clean the positive and negative battery terminals to ensure a good connection with the tester's clamps.
2 Connect the positive and negative clamps to the appropriate battery terminals. The clamps must make firm contact with the battery terminals or the test results will be inaccurate or the tester may not work at all.
3 Turn the tester on and choose the option for "full charging system test." This will test your battery, starter and alternator and provide the most accurate picture of the problem.
4 Follow the directions on the tester's screen. These instructions will include cranking the vehicle after the battery test is performed, holding the engine at a certain RPM range and turning on certain accessories.
5 Read the results displayed on the tester's screen. The tester should scroll through the results, starting with the battery, then the starter and finally the alternator. An alternator test result showing diode ripple problems indicates a bad alternator.
Thanks

How do I know if its my battery or the altinator that needs to be fixed.

Take your vehicle to an auto parts store. They have testers that will check your battery, alternator, and starter for free right in the parking lot. Most of the workers have some mechanical experience, and they would probably give you some good advice about local mechanics. If your battery is bad, and you buy one from thier store, they will install the battery for free right in the parking lot.

It would be a good idea to check the battery and the alternator before looking at the starter because these are easier and cheaper to fix. It kinda sounds like the solenoid on your starter might be bad, but someone should test it to be 100% sure.

1989 chevrolet caprice alternator draining battery, and wont start. We replaced the alternator, feul pump, battery, & starter.

There is a circuit staying open that is draining the battery. Chances are it is the ignition switch or the starter relay. Most likely it's the ignition switch. If it stays open the starter circuit continues to draw power even though the car is off. It's under the dashboard above the gas pedal. Someone should be able to test it with a circuit tester to see if it's the problem. Good luck!

Check battery light stays on even though the voltage at the battery is 12.90 with engine off and 14.60 at idle ?

Your alternator is putting out good voltage, so internal voltage regulator is working, but what's happening the Diode is what going bad, the alternator put's out ac voltage, and the Diode turn it to dc voltage, could mess up your battery and elec. system, the Diode are like a one way valve, have it checked with a alternator, battery, starter tester, most auto parts will do this for free, if Diode's are bad it will show up in there tester.

1999 ford mustang cobra alternator troubleshooting

Generally, you can check and test alternator with this procedure...

1. Clean the positive and negative battery terminals to ensure a good connection with the tester's clamps.
2. Connect the positive and negative clamps to the appropriate battery terminals. The clamps must make firm contact with the battery terminals or the test results will be inaccurate or the tester may not work at all.
3. Turn the tester on and choose the option for "full charging system test." This will test your battery, starter and alternator and provide the most accurate picture of the problem.
4. Follow the directions on the tester's screen. These instructions will include cranking the vehicle after the battery test is performed, holding the engine at a certain RPM range and turning on certain accessories.
5. Read the results displayed on the tester's screen. The tester should scroll through the results, starting with the battery, then the starter and finally the alternator. An alternator test result showing diode ripple problems indicates a bad alternator.

Hope helps (remember rated this).

Having to push-start the car to get it going

i would first check the starter motor by putting a live tester to the small terminal while someone turns the key if tester does not light up you may need to check the fuses or ignition switch. if it does light up it may be a faulty starter.
if the starter is fine you may want to get your battery and alternator tested, you can do this your self if you have a multi meter by getting the engine running and connecting the red wire to the battery positive and the black to the battery negative, the mever should read between 12.9v - 14.5v. if this is ok it will probably be your battery.

if this helps please let me know
    cheers

Switching inner parts on ford F150 alternator F-150 1992

You need to know which inner parts are bad before you begin to replace everything. It may be the bushings, the bearings or the brushes. Other then that, replacing the inner parts are fairly easy. I use to work at Rayloc in the town we lived in and I did this on a daily basis. No matter what the parts are, all you need to do it take the bols out and put everything back as you found them. You can do a GOOGLE searh and it will show you a diagram if you need it. I am guessing you might. It is a little harder to explain, and sounds hard to do, but in all reality I am a famle and I can do it, so can you....
