I vote for oil pressure sender unit. Cost of new sender vs putting in a maual guage to see if is the pressure is dropping is about the same.

Oil pressure guage intermitently falls to zero when idling. The dashboard "check gauge" light comes on. Has happened on three different occasions out of about 20 driving excursions. When it isn't happening...

My jeep also has started doing this. I replaced the oil pressure sensor. Sensor on the 4.7 is above the oil filter, follow the wires, typicaly is a 1 1/16 socket.

1996 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L with 93K. Oil dummy

I had the same problem and ended up changing the oil pump and it did not fix it. (Peace of mind anyway and it was cheap) I replaced the pressure sensor (that happens to be tucked in deep between the back of the engine and firewall) and the pressure gauge worked just fine after that.

2004 Grand Cherokee: oil pressure fluctuates

if you know for certain that the sending unit is correct and the guage is accurate, then yiu may have big problems.....while the engine is running open the oil filler hole.. is everything wet with oil? or does it look dry or just a little lubed? you can allways install an aftermarket oil pressure guage(crappy tire) if you get the same results with that then you may have a week oil pump....worst case scenerio... need an engine rebuild as the moter may have wear issues.does the pressure slowly drop as the motor warms up? at idle ? does it jump up when you step on the gas?

Isuzu 2.8TD high erratic oil pressure problem.

Does it have a PCV valve in the system? If yes, has it been changed?

Start up

You need to see if the fuel pump pressure is bleeding off, if it is the check valve in the fuel pump is defective and the pump must be replaced, this issue causes long crank times before the engine starts because the system has to build pressure in the fuel line. To test the check valve hook up a fuel pressure test guage, start the engine and run it for a few seconds, turn off the engine and watch the pressure, it should no drop off more than a few PSI.
