I would check all belts and hoses and coolant level. I would have the oil and filter changed and I would change the air filter element. I would pull the wheels and check the condition of the brake pads and rotors. Check transmission fluid level and the level of the brake fluid in the master cylinder. Make sure all fluids are at the appropriate levels. Just routine preventive maintenance should do the trick. Hope this helped and best wishes.

If you are trying to make sure he has no problems, I would take the car to Firestone and have them perform an inspection for 30.00. They will look at the brake system, the suspension and thoroughly inspect the vehicle. Make sure you perform an oil change, a radiator flush and fill (this will make sure it makes it through the winter), spark plugs and possibly wires (wires if they look cracked or worn) and an air filter. Have the tires checked rotated and balanced also. If you perform these few simple things you will not have any worries about your vehicle while your son is in school.

New spark plugs
New Plug wires
New filter & Oil
Fresh 50/50 coolant
Check tire condition
Check tranny fluid, if dark red or light brown, then change fluid & filter.

If you have Autozones by you, they should.

The only way to find out is to take it to a mechanic who has an engine analyzer and the rubbing could be caused by a loose mudshield (or a dozen other things).
