Question about 2001 Chevrolet Venture

1 Answer

I have the same problem. The temp gauge is all over the place.

Sometimes the temp gauge needle is pointing off the gauge for days. Overnight it sometimes comes back down. The radiator isn't hot and the car is not acting like the engine is hot. I baught a thermostat but haven't put it in yet. Is it the gauge controll panel that is the problem? I am going to replace the thermostat. How do I burp the system after replacing it so that there is no air buble trapped behind the thermostat? Is that even the problem?

You dont have to "Burp" the system. The problem is probably in the temperature sender unit. If you get a book like a Haynes repair book, at your parts store they are written in Laymen terms so they are easy to understand they will walk you through replacing it or finding it. They are not that hard to change. Could also be a gauge but I would try the sender first or at least test it with a ohm meter which they will describe in the book.

Heat gauge needle pointed the wrong way. Catches on fuel gauge needle

I have fixed speedometer and RPM gauges before. Never had the temp gauge do this. You have to remove the instrument panel and rotate it clock wise. Watch the needle and see if it moves. If it does, take it back to the original position. I check them with a scanner. But they seem to work right. The just have glitches sometimes that drives the needle to the other side.

Temp gauge and blazer jumps around when driving

Vehicle temperature gauges (temp gauge) read the temperature of the liquid in cooling system. From what I understand, the temp gauge jumping around has since gone away after you placed water into the radiator. It is very possible that water converted into steam was trapped in the cooling system and reached the temp sensor in your engine. The vehicle moving caused this steam to shift around reflecting rapid changes in temperature on the sensor, causing the needle to jump around on your console.
Hope this helps.

When jackaroo 1988 is motoring where does the needle in the temperature gauge normally be

If your temp gauge has only the cold (C) or hot (H) letters then the operating range would be the width of the needle under 1/2 way between c and h. If it remains steady at slightly over 1/2 way that would be just the setting of the gauge. How to get to know where the needle would sit at a specific position in relation to water temp. Do the following
Remove the temp sender unit and attach an earth wire to the body of the unit to earth. Place the sender unit in a container of water up to the threads .Put a mercury thermometer in the container beside the sender unit Apply heat to the container and watch the gauge needle move in relation to the thermometer reading. Operating temp will be about 80 degrees C on the thermometer and that would be about 1/2 way on the gauge.

Its fine, temp needle going up shows that engine is warming up and as soon as the radiator fan starts, temp of coolant drop and this is shown by the temp gauge needle. In most cars (even mine) it stays in middle most of the time unless you are in a traffic with AC on, it will show up more temp. What you can do is get the radiator flushed and coolant changed. Also check the water pump. To do so when engine is cold (in first start in morning), open the radiator cap and ask someone to rev the engine. If the coolant level moves up and down then water pump is also fine.

I sounds like you have an electrical problem with the dashboard. It will have to be pulled and checked.

I had the same problem with the gas tank on my 95 mustang. You are going to have to drop the tank. There is a rubber seal where the filler neck goes into the gas tank that has failed and must be replaced. You are losing even more gas than you think. Everytime you make a left turn gas is sloshing out through that bad seal.

Hi! The MAF (mass air flow) sensor is surely faulty. The MAF has big contribution on the engine performance specially on the idling an vacuum supply. If the MAF is faulty the rpm will drop eratically or die. Regarding the overheating problem, you may want to check the radiator blower for it may be tripping that sometimes it works and sometimes won't. This can be a good cause. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

the float on the sender unit in your fuel tank will be stuck in the full position and needs freeing off, so it moves up and down again there will be a clip and rubber seal in the top of your fuel tank where you can remove the sender unit to fix it.

Temp gauge and gas gauge not working

I had the same problem with my 2001 Pontiac Montana and the intake manifold gasket. This is a major problem with these 3.4L engines, if you are in the states I'm pretty sure there is a class action law suite against GM for this. I had my manifold gasket replaced and it was about $1000 CAD. You need to get your vehicle looked at right away as this could cause major engine damage, coolant will leak into the engine and soon enough you will be replacing that too. Good Luck
