Lights on instrument panel for the speedometer keep going out.

I see the instruments are actually underneath the dash and reflect to the back of the dash. When I start the car the lights start out on, but after a couple of minutes they dim and then go out completely. Any ideas?

It's only the gauges, all the other lights on the dash work.

  • Kirk Laabs Jul 27, 2009

Also, It's not only at night. I cannot see gauges because the gauges are underneath the dash and the light reflects to the back of the dash.

Here's a couple of pictures. One view is the instrument panel as the driver sees it, the other is underneath the dash looking up from the floor.

The gauge cluster is in the very top of the dash, per picture number two I sent you and are facing toward the floor, can you explain how to get to the socket. Thanks much.

What do these lights illuminate? the gauges? or the whole dash, they go out at night then I assume? if so have u checked to make sure the dash dimmer switch is turned up, don't misunderstand but that is a common reason, the dimmer gets turned down and folks don't realize it and they bring there car in for repair, have seen it many time's, the other possibility is that dimmer control switch is defective, have seen both, turned off lights and defective dimmers, am a 25 year Ford dealer technician so have allot of experience with these problems..

Instrument cluster is going crazy

The instrument cluster is what holds your speedometer, fuel gauge, temp gauge, odometer, etc. You can get one from a scrap yard. Call around to local scrap yards and ask them if they have any cars that are the same model as your's. Some scrap yards will have already pulled parts and have them available for purchase.

Keep in mind that when you go to sell the vehicle, you need to inform the buyer of the situation with the cluster and that the mileage on the odometer does not reflect the actual miles.

Dash lights and running lights dont work

At the instrument panel fuse block, check 15A fuse 10 (indicators). In the relay center, check 10A fuse 8 (speedometer).

For "back lights" problem: At the left underhood fuse block, check the 20A HEADLAMP BREAKER. At the instrument panel fuse block, check 15A fuse 6C. Both of these supply power to the lamp control module. If you set the park lamp switch to the on position, the tail part of the tail/stop/turn lamps should light, the separate tail lamps should light, the license lamps should light, and the rear marker lamps should light. If any of these don't light check for burned out lamps, bad sockests, and bad wiring or missing grounds (black wires)

Replacing dash lights on mercury mariner

dealers and their desperation to get in your pockets lol. seriously as simple as changing a light bulb from a lamp. start with taking the plastic housing off of your steering column, then the dash starts co come apart use a plastic putty knife where it is held on by clips so to not scar up your dash. a few screws here and there and your indicator panel is visible and accessible. although you could save yourself a lot of trouble if you can access your instrument panel from underneath the dash.

Instrument panel reflects service "B".

You can stop by a local Autozone, Advance, etc parts store and they'll reset your lights for you FREE . Dash resets don't clear possible faults.

Remove the 5 mounting screws from the instrument cluster trim plate and remove the trim plate. Remove the 4 mounting screws from the instrument panel face plate and remove the face plate.Remove the instrument light grid from the center of the cluster. From behind the instrument cluster reach behind the speedometer and disconnect the speedometer cable by releasing the tab. Pull the cluster forward just enough to detach the "check engine" light bulb from the center of the cluster. Remove the instrument cluster from the dashboard.

My instrument panel lights come on when first

Check on the front panel where you see fuel consumption, outside temp etc that the botton that says black has not been pushed. If pushed no dash lights will come on and the panel screen for the outside temp etc will also be black. So give it a push and the lights should come back on.

My gauges don't work, on the instrument panel why?it's a 1994 dodge caravan 3.0 Liters, list of things that don't work are speedometer - gas - temperature - kilometers - I never know how much gas I have or...

There is a fuse for the instrument under the dash on the drivers side, if the fuse is good. Then give the dash a hit with your close fist right over the instrument panel, sometimes that brings it back to life. It's common for the wire harness clip on the instrument panel circuit board solder goes bad and need to be re soldered, the heat of the current after a few years will melt the solder and the clip comes loose and needs to be re solder back in place. Just remove the instrument panel from the dash, disconnect the wire harness and remove the circuit board and solder the clip back in place. Good luck and hope this helps. be glad to help.
