Question about 1995 Pontiac Sunfire

Pontiac Sunfire Exhaust pipe hanging low

Hello,

I have a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire. The main exhaust pipe that runs from the muffler to the catalytic converter is hanging a few inches from the road.

Is there a hanger or bracket that I can get to cheaply repair this? I'm trying to sell the vehicle, and it's not worth it to install a new catalytic converter kit, as that's roughly half the cost of the vehicle's worth.

Is there a diagram for this model that will help me identify what kind of bracket/hanger i need, and where to install it?

Thanks!

Put the car up on ramps or jack stands and look for a broken hanger. If the rubber part is broken buy a new one, if the metal rod has rusted away then go to a auto parts store and buy a universal hanger. If the exhaust is broken buy a length of repair pipe. Either ridgid for a straight section or flexible for bends. Use a sawzall or hacksaw to cut off broken ends, fit repair pipe and clamps over the old pipes, then tighten the clamps. The people at the store should be able to answer any questions for you.

Most local muffler shop will inspect the exhaust for you for free and if it's just a broken hanger, they can replace it for around $45.00. You could always go to the auto parts store and buy a new hanger, but your going to have to get under the car and remove any old parts left over from the old hanger and place the new one. Good luck and hope this helps. If you go to Auto Zone they can help you look up all the hangers for that car or any muffler shop as mentioned earlier.

Last time. I have Ford focus 2003 sedan dohc 2L. I lost a part from exhaust system. from back to front I see 1. tail pipe 2. rectangular box shaped part? Lunch Box? 3. missing part Muffler?

Starting from the front, coming off the exhaust manifold should have, 1. Exhaust pipe, 2. Catalytic converter, 3. Exhaust pipe, 4. Resonator, 5. Tail pipe. Also, there should be an Oxygen sensor somewhere around the catalytic converter.

Convert dual exhaust on 99 sunfire gt to single?

You can cut out the Y pipe and replace it with a flex pipe from parts store, then clamp each end of the flex pipe, the pipe diameter will be 1-7/8 or 2 inch, also for the pipe replacement piece would work from a sunfire or cavalier from 1995 and up, might need to replace the muffler strap too. as it can break from rusting, if not already rusted and broken.

Ford Escape with rusted, broken bolts/muffler hanging loose from catalytic converter estimate/fix

That is a pretty common issue with the escapes. Most of the time the broken bolts can be removed and new bolts along with a gasket can be installed and everything is fine. Sometimes the flanges are to rusted and the two pieces need to be replaced. Just depends on the vehicle.

In a 1996 pontiac sunfire there are 2 oxygen sensors .. one on top.. one on bottom of engine. i need to know where exactly they are located and how easily they are accessed

Oxygen sensors are always located in the exhaust system. The top one you refer to is likely on the exhaust manifold, or just after on the exhaust pipe, but before the catalytic converter. If you have a v-6 there may be one on each bank of the block in the exhaust manifolds. Then, there is also an O2 sensor located in exhaust, after the catalytic converter, to monitor efficiency of the converter.
Both should be fairly easy to access. Good luck.

I have a four door 1998 pontiac sunfire. It has been make a sort of weird vibration comin from the muffler area lately and now all of a sudden after drivin it around like that for a cpl weeks the engine...

I would guess that you have had part of the internals of the muffler break up. The most painful possibility is that the catalytic converter has failed and it's restricting the output from the exhaust. This will cause all kinds of issues with back pressure in the system which will do no good and will certainly cause the check engine light to come on as lambda sensors are affected by the change in flow from the manifold caused by the restriction.

Did you by ay chance smell (or do you now smell) sulphur dioxide (rotting eggs) when the engine stalled? This is a classig sign of a failed catalytic converter. It could of course be something as simple as a breakdown inside one of the muffler units and silencer material blocking the pipe. If this was tha case, then a classic sign is sound absorbtion material (usually fibreglass wool) being blown out of the tailpipe.

Where in the engine is the catalytic converter

The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system and is usually found under the vehicle, and the exhaust will run from the exhaust manifold to a pre-catalytic converter, and then down to the catalytic converter, and then the exhaust will run from the catalytic converter to the exhaust muffler, and then continue out to the end of the tail pipe.
I have provided an image of the catalytic converter to help assist you.
