Engine sounds not normal when running

I need more information. Most of the newer engines have an engine knock sensor on the engine to let the computer know there is a knock. If it is just a strange noise, no check engine light, then it could be a fan belt, an alternator bearing, an idle bearing on the fan belt. I need more information. When does it do it, all the time? What does it sound like?

My neighbor's 1998 Cavalier is making a strange noise. It has automatic transmission, new tires, and 155,000 miles. When idling at a stop, it sounds fine, but when it starts movig and hits 15 or 20 mph...

Try getting on an open road, get up to about 45 MPH or where ever the noise is loudest. Put the car in neutral and turn the engine off. You can roll in a straight line for a long time. Make sure nodody is around you. If the sound stops when the engine is off, then the noise is coming from the motor. If the sound is still there, its got to be coming from the tires. Id guess a wheel bearing.

Have a strange humming noise that can be heard

Hi:
Often "humming" noises like what you are experiencing are caused by a failing bearing somewhere. Some usual suspects are wheel bearings, alternator bearings, and sometimes even your waterpump, but usually it starts leaking too. To start narrowing down what it is, have someone ride with you to see if the noise is coming from left side or right side, or engine area, then see if it happens when the car is not moving, or just when the drive wheels are pulling the car? This way , hopefully you can pin point the culprit!

98 lincoln navigator loud noise, shaking, high rpm at idle, drive

I don't know how much oil you had to put in but it sounds like you have maybe more than opne issue and both sound major. One is engine reving and speed not picking up sounds like trans problem. Two the engine shaking and making noise and being run low on oil leans toward possible engine damage. If your mechanicly inclined check all fluids and when checking trans fluid smell it. If it smells burnt the trans has been damaged. Check oil pressure and make sure coolant is full. You may have to take it into the shop.

Noise near windshield /wiper

Do you probably have air coming into the engine compartment from somwhere. Check the wheel wells, and under the engine to see if there are any missing or broken parts. It's strange that it can be noticed only at that speed.
