Front drive noise when turning left/right

I have a 1995 4 door Excel LX. Has done around 300,000 km. When turning left or right while starting to increase speed there is a grinding noise coming from the front drive. If i back off on the acceleration it tends to decrease. As soon as the wheels are centered (ie straighten up) it stops.

I have raised the front and started the engine and ran in first gear and turned the steering left and right.. no noise. But i notice only one wheel is turning (the right). the left does not turn and in fact is hard to manually turn. The boots around the drive trains left and right are broken and there is a fair degrees of grease and dirt impregnated in the joints.

Is this a sign that the drive shaft/transaxle is failing? the steering is unaffected and the wheels do not rock excessively so the wheel bearings appear ok.

ANy help or advice appreciated!
Jeff

You need new drive shaft assemblies (AKA halfshafts) which include both inner and outer CV joints and shafts. And although it's normal for only the passenger side wheel to spin in forward gear when in snow or mud, the drivers side should spin when the wheels are in the air. You either have a sticking brake caliper or bad wheel bearing on the drivers side. With 300K on your Hyundai the cost of the repair is more than the car is worth. Sell it for parts and buy a new car.

Outlander howling noise in front wheels

with the wheel bearings failure , it is very possible that the "U" joint or cv joints for the front drive were damaged
I would be looking in that area especially as you mention on turning right

You have a worn right front wheel bearing - all your symptoms are classic signs of wheel bearing failure. You'll likely need a 6-8 ton shop press to replace it. Dropping your car off for the work and picking it up completed can run you $250-300, but many places will charge only $30 or so if you remove the spindle (which houses the bearing) and bring it to them, so they only have to press out the bearing and install the new one.
