Question about 1993 Ford Escort 4 Door

1 Answer

The engine sometimes doesn't start

My battery is ok but more frequently the car won't start 1st time. Once it does start it continues fine. But I never know when it isn;t going to start. Over the past few nonths the problem occurs mid afternoon, and at first I thoufgt it was due to the hot weather. then when the weather cjanged it happend in the mornngd when the weayther was cooler. Now even after pumping the accelerator a few times, I NEED TO WAIT FOR ABOUT 10 MINS. Someone suggested the problem might be with the spark plugs.

Thanks for the advice on clarifying the problem. I needed to call the RAC out and they tested various things and narrowed it down to the coolant sensor temperature coolant sensor.

When you say does not start do you mean it won't crank over? or it cranks but won't start? if it cranks and won't run there can be several things wrong, first a coil could be breaking down with heat. Second fuel could be getting hot and boiling out of the throttle body and or carburater. IS the EGR valve sticking? is the evap canister purge valve not operating correctly? Next time you have it not start do the following, with the driver window down turn key to the run postion listen for the fuel pump to run for two seconds. does it? if not you have a pump or relay problem, if you here it turn the key on and pull air cleaner off you need a second person to do this while looking down in the carbuator step on the pedal with the key in the run postion, do you see gas? no? crank engine over do you see gas pumping into the engine no? it's fuel related pump or filter or sock on pump in tank this requires a fuel test to see if the pump is not working, if you have fuel pull a plug wire off one spark plug stick a screwdriver in the plug wire and get the metal part of the screw driver near a clean metal ground about 1/4 inch away from ground don't hold the screw driver while cranking. next crank the engine over is there spark? yes? then it's another problem if no then you know it's igntion system malfunctioning. if sparking put plug wire back on and hold your hands over the opening of the carburator crank engine and if it starts then you have an intake leak. post here what you find out, you are only going to be able to solve this by figureuing out what is causeing it, you could pay a lot of money to do this. If a mechanic can't reproduce the problem they can't fix it they can charge you for a lot of time for tests because it takes time to find it. so doing this yourself well help save money and narrow the problem down. If you know it's a fuel or spark then the mechanic can test just that system saving you money. Let me know if you find out anything.

GO TO YOUR BATTERY AND BEFORE YOU DO REMOVE THE TERMINALS,USE A MEMORY SAVER ON JUST TO PROTECT THE RADIO CODE,IF YOU DO NOT HAVE IT NOT TO STAY WITHOUT RADIO BECAUSE LATER YOU NEED CODE TO PUT IT IN ORDER, THEN PROCEED ON REMOVING ONE BY ONE THE TERMINALS AND BY USING A BRASH OR SAND PAPER,CLEAN BOTH SURFACES ON NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE TERMINALS FOR GOOD CONTACT. USE ALSO A BATTERY TERMINALS GREASE FOR PROTECTION.

Car wont start, seems like battery went dead

If the car doesn't start with a jump you might have a bad alternator. The alternator supplies voltage to the car once the engine is running. If the battery is dead, and the alternator isn't putting out sufficient voltage, the engine cannot run. Then again sometimes a car with an extremely dead or internally shorted battery WON'T start with a jump. Replace the battery and try again.

2002 Yukon Hesitation when starting- No checking engine lights!!

This can be fuel pump related or just fuel filter related, spark plugs and injectors.
When engine is cold vaporization of gasoline is minimum. When fuel vapor is less than required and the fuel mixture is not ideal, ignition happens harder than it does under ideal running conditions of engine. When fuel pups is sweak, or filter is limiting, or fuel injectors are not injecting gasoline with improper pattern inside engine, or just becasue of corroded spark plugs, cold engine faces difficulties during first ignition.

PS: sometimes car starts and stalls.it fails to start once more. this can be a sign of broken crank position sensor. FYI.

Our car starts right up in the morning just fine. The rest of the day in and out of car it has trouble starting. What could it be?

If battery and connections are good (it's a big draw, different then other components).Because a bad connection or old battery can sometimes work the starter after it sits, doesn't make it .Some times a starter has a bad spot, thats whe you see some one get under and directly jump it.If buying a battery get at least recommended cranking amp size battery,Larger auto stores check battery no charge (bad joke). Its free google /bing who does a free battery test.Auto zons, pep boys, sears.May even be running a sale. Most switch out battery for fee (no charge*),*Hopefully you will laugh later.

no. I'd suggest to disconnect a battery for 15 mins, reconnect, wait for 5 mins and try to restart. If it doesn't help (sometimes there's a program block to prevent stealing equipment) call a dealer
