Also is a chance that your alternator has a bad diode which can draw current with the engine off but still has the capacity to charge the battery when operating.
About every cheap Chinese multimeter has a 10 A range on it that one can put in series between either (negative is safest) battery clamp and the battery post with the engine OFF. Don't use that range while the engine is on, it will toast the meter. You can find these meters at Radio Shack (in the US), electronic supply houses and auto parts stores. They can be had for <$20 US and can be used for many things at home. (Harbor Freight has them under $10.) They are simple to use and come with nearly intelligible Chinglish instructions.

You have a drain on the batt... try looking for lights that are not shutting off.. at nite would be best.. trunk lite glove box lite under hood light.. if these stay on you will end up w/ a dead batt.. if you find one that dont turn off just un plug it

BATTERY PROBLEM

Ultimate solution is change the battery... because the capacity of battery cells is poor.. this could be the reason if battery is old...
Still u can take a chance by completely removing the battery fluid and replacing it new battery fluid... but keep in mind that, after doing so, u'll need to charge the battery fully before using it in car...
This kind of battery problem is common in all diesel cars, the reason I think is, Diesel engine need heavy torque to start that draws heavy current from battery.. so if you are facing starting trouble for the vehicle, then battery is surely going to discharge frequently...
Still try the solution mentioned above and still the problem persists, then replace the battery with new one.
((I am considering that the battery you are having is 3-4 years old...))

Ford Escort 1998 not starting. Replaced Alternator, Belt and Battery. Fully charged Battery starts straight away, but after a while of driving, switch engine off and the the car doesnt turn over like the...

Not a sensor or fuse. Possibly the battery: only way to know is have it checked. Best way is check when car wont start. Should have over 12 volts. I would suspect alternator is not charging battery. Put a voltmeter on battery when car is running. Voltmeter should read 13.5-14 volts. If not, something's not right. Check your battery grounds for tightness and cleaness. Sometimes a loose connection will keep battery from either charging or starting. If you still have the problem, check your starter for a short, drawing too much amperage.

About 3 weeks ago, the battery in my 2001 chevy lumina died. I wasn't able to drive it for about a week and went out today to do so and the lights came on, dimly, and the car wouldn't start. The battery...

Well, I would charge the battery with a plug in battery charger for about 3 days to make sure it is fully charged.

If the battery doesn't take a charge, then I would replace the battery.

Make sure the connections are shiny, clean and tight at the contact points.

After the battery is charged, then I would have it tested for starting/charging at your local parts store or Sears or Walmart or other battery retailer.

Remember, batteries only last 3 years on average, so if charging it doesn't solve the starting problem, then I would consider buying a new battery for the vehicle.

Good luck on this repair.

I boost the battery, and it does hold a charge but only for a day or a day and a half at most. I'm not sure what could be causing this problem. The battery was purchased Last year brand new, but sat all...

if the battery holds the charge for a day or 2 wile you drive the car normally then you should check your alternator live the car 2 or 3 days after the battery was charged and check if it starts and run if it does run it another 2 or 3 days and see if the battery dies if it dies most likely your alternator is bad, your mechanic can test it with in 3 minutes to see if it is the alternator or the battery

1999 ford escort zx2 alternator works brand new battery but battery isnt charging !

Stecorbett:

May I suggest that you drive your car to one of the major auto stores and they can and will check your alternator for you to make sure it is good/bad.These places like AutoZone do this all the time. They do not charge for the check out. (Of course they are hoping that if you need a part you will buy it from them.

One other suggestion. If you do need a new alternator, get a rebuilt one. It is cheaper and most always comes with a warranty.

Hope this helps Good luck Loringh PS please take a moment to give me a rating

My 1998 Ford escort

It's probably your Clock Spring in your steering column. It's a tape strip of wires behind your steering wheel and if it snapped (which happens very easily) than your blinkers would not shut of automatically(when you turn them on you have to turn them off as well) your airbag light comes on and ceases to work, and most of the time your horn shuts down too. I've had that problem with two of my cars. A 1998 Ford Escort and a 2000 Kia Sephia (Which I dont recommend anyone purchasing. A recall was made on that car because it couldnt have a set of brake pads last more than a month. Sometimes the rotors had to be replaced as well.) Anywho. Have you mechanic look at that or go purchase one and put it in yourself.
