Suzuki Vitara 1996 Gearbox Problem

Gears 1 to 5 working fine, however after driving in fith gear it is then not possible to engage reverse even after selecting other gears. So after cruising down the motorway I come off and get onto a side street where if I meet an on coming vehicle and have to reverse I cant! This problem does not occur if I have only been using gears 1 to 4. Any ideas!?

Thanks

You have a sticky valve in the tranny.... first ask the car dealer and if they cant help .. I know of a special tranny conditioner they sell for this problem it called trany/valve conditioner... it is name specific you need to find the tranny conditioner not a slip or leak product...good luck

Mazda bravo b2600 gearbox growles and grumbles. cant select 2nd or 4th gear. 1st, 3rd,5th & reverse ok.

I am sorry to tell that the gearbox need to have some major repair. It is also not advisable to continue driving as the gearbox can breakdown completely leaving you stranded. At least one the cluster drive gears in the gearbox is damaged (gear tooth stripped off) that will result in that only some of the gears being able to be selected. The broken off tooth are still in the gearbox and due to the oil movement in the gearbox it can be "washed up " in between to engaged gears destroying those as well. This will happen up to the point where there are no gear selection at all.

Hi On driving a Suzuki Vitara JLX 96 P Reg

Sounds like a clutch problem to me.
So, with the engine off, can you select all gears? If yes, your gearbox is probably OK.
And now with the engine idling, can you select any gears with out crunching? If this is difficult, then try this next test in an area where movement forward or backwards won't be a problem.
With the engine OFF, foot ON the clutch, the handbrake OFF, and in 1st gear, start the car. BE READY TO TURN IT OFF.
If the car moved forward as you cranked the engine, then your clutch is not adjusted properly or has worn out. That is more-than-likely the smell you got before - burnt clutch disc from it slipping.
You can drive it, but every time you want to start off, you'll have to turn the engine off, select 1st then start the engine. Accelerate slowly, making sure the revs don't rise faster that you're speeding up, and change gear by judging engine revs between gears.
Don't keep driving it as it is, as you WILL have gearbox problems if you don't fix the clutch.

Hi, I have a 1991 Suzuki JLX Vitara with the Front Right hub is locked into 4WD and I can seem to unlock it and the gearbox of late feels notchy, sometimes difficult to change into gear

Try hammering the front right hub with a wood or a rubber hammer while slowly reversing the vehicle, and keep on unlocking the hub while doing this.
spray it with lubrication first
yes, you need to change the gear oil in your gear box
Have your clutch re adjusted, it may be worn out , that's why you are having a hard time changing gears or have it bleed to keep the air out if you are using hydraulic.
If you dont hear any noise in your gear box while driving, its nothing serious, worst thing could be replacing your clutch lining and pressure plate.
