Question about 1991 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

1991 Grand Am 2.5 L not starting

After a particular hot day (and running low on gas) my car stalled going down a hill. I got it running again and got to destination. After an hour I went to start car and couldn't. Siting gas as issue got gas, returned, started, and left. Drove car to work next day but ended up towing home. Car turns but never ignites. Have been attempting to take off starter to test but cannot get starter off. I cannot get the plate that covers rear of starter motor off. I'm wondering if approach is wrong.

Yes the car does crank it just doesn't start. I tried pouring a little gas on the carb and it attempts to ignite but never does.

If it's turning over the starter doesn't sound like your problem.

When running a fuel injected car out of fuel you run the risk of take sediment { particles } flowing to both the filter to create a clog or the injectors to clog them.

Be a bit more specific does the car crank or crank and just doesn't start

well there are many factors governing that. moving

up hill or down hills.

A/T fails to down shift?
M/T you didnt down shift.
both cars the engine stalled as you shifted?
bad ISC, it is used for deceleration called the dash pot effect
as you cut the throttle the ECU opens the ISC to stop on the fly
neck snapping effects, (software that replaced and old part on a CARB)

Motor shuts off when started up,shuts off when driving.

hot engine or cold, or both? 180F+ is hot.
Shuts off, idling or on the fly, say at 30mph right foot down it dies?
just clue here...
engine stalls. is complex. but in the macro its below, using tools finds the reason,, but you never said did it restart easy./??????
1: lost of engine compression hot engine, (or overheated)
2: lost 12vdc electric power at stall (caused it) dash goes dead. ?
3: lost spark, test spark at the failure point. if dead trouble shoot speak.
4 bad fueling, too lean (say the fuel pump dies) or too rich.
too rich causes wet spark plug tips. (lots of causes )
5: stalls due to idle RPM too low, below 800 is too low.
too low idle rpm is caused by many things, but top 2 are.
A: EGR stuck wide open, clean it, as the books shows at 60k miles
B: ISC stuck closed. (same deal clean it)

now repost and say when it stalled,
at a read light or flying up a hill wot, wot= wide open throttle.
and when it dies, is the restart easy or hard.

Car stalls after warm on hot day after a few stops. will stall when stopping at intersections, and when taking foot off the gas going down hills.

The idling setting in the car is not set correctly or the idling is LOW due to fault in the setting.
You will need to check if the throttle position is correct and the idle setting WITH THE CLUTCH PRESSED must be of the CORRECT IDLING RPM. If not reset the position after cleaning the system.

1991 Pontiac Grand-Am: It stalls and kills after running awhile during increase or decrease in gas need; like up-hill or in slowed down traffic and stops. Not so bad in the Winter months or short...

check the fuel filter for glogging up. and pressure test the fuel pump to see if fuel is reaching engine ok. it could be a failing fuel pump. but if a pump really goes engine quits as well as the fuel pump.after getting things checked out. you may want to clean out throttle body, especially around throttle plate. and make sure air filter is clean, and the plugs are ok.

My car was low on gas and cut off on the way home. i went and got some gas but car wont start. what could be the problem?

Is it still not working? Sometimes you need to let it sit about 15 minutes to get it started again and there may also be a chance you didnt put enough gas in it. My car ran out going up a hill and we put in 2 gallons but needed another gallon before my car would start again.

Hope this is helpful

Running fine then at hiway speed stalls down shift and usualy fixes prob. for a while

Check your transmission fluid level. The fluid could be low. This will cause the car to slow down especially going up hills.

Nissan Sentra random stalls and wont start hot

Check out the catalytic converter, might be plugged up. I have seen some cars that will run fine, and like someone threw a switch the car acted like yours, no power, would not rev and died. Later when cold they would be OK for a while then just get worse and worse.

Turn on a/c to max and hot air comes out...

Check if compressor clutch is engaged when A/C is selected,
- if not, check low pressure gas sense switch
- if it is open circuit the system needs to be checked for leaks and re-gassed.
(To check low gas switch, just ( briefly!) bypass it - if compress clutch engages you have low gas press.)

1991 buick regal starting and running problem

Sounds like your car is overheating. If you have a temp gauge it should show that. If you just have an idiot light, by the time it comes on it's already too hot to operate. AFTER the car is cooled down, open the radiator cap to see how much coolant has been lost. Chances are there is alot missing. Add WATER (no sense in adding coolant if it's going to leak out) and idle the car at home. Look underneath as it warms up to find where the leak is.

1991 Isuzu 4X4 Pickup 3.1 V6 won't warm start plus shudder in low

Your flywheel sound like it has hot spots on it, making the clutch chatter. You might need to pull the flywheel off and get it re-surface. This is like turning your rotor, or brake drum. If you pull the flywheel, you will see discolor spots on your flywheel. This is called hot spots, and will make the clutch slip.

On the other problem, have you changed to fuel filter and fuel pump. It almost sound like your running out of fuel????
